i need some tire help. I know this isnt the brightest thing to do but i needed something pretty quick. i bought a used tire 275/35/18 because my front tire got slashed(how? who knows) I didnt buy new cause they were to darn expensive right now. the tire i got has 10/32 so its about the same as my other front. Anyway it showed up today(ebay) and i see a few issues with it and was wondering if you guy could take a look and see if its ok to use. It says on there site all there used tires are at or above federal standards ect.

hole in tread with patch underneath

    inside of patch?

    edge of lip on tire.

I've never been a fan of patching a tire as I've always used plugs. However, with that said, I see no real issue with the patch. It looks like it was applied right.

The bead could be an issue, but without seeing how it mounts to the wheel, I can't say for sure. If it seals, you're good to go. If the patch fails, you'll loose air. I wouldn't do any autocrossing or drag racing with this tire. But other than that, you're probably fine.

Side wall? I though this was on the tread, not the side wall.

I've had two tires that had holes in them close to the tire shoulder and I had to scrap them. They can't be fixed properly and most reputable tire places will not patch them either. Here is a link to one of many different sites on the web that will tell you the same thing. http://tirewarehouse.net/site/flat_repair.html Ken will also tell you the same thing since he advised me to replace my tire when I asked a similar question of him on this board.

plugs!!!!!!!!!! omg broh... no no no no... in fact, NHTSA is getting ready to outlaw plugs. I can't tell you how many tire failure analysis cases I investigated and linked it to the plug repair. I also served as Govt. expert witness in a plug repaired tire death law suit against the U.S. Govt.

Plugs do not seal the inner liner of the tire. The inner liner of a tubeless radial is the tube of the tire. Air and moisture begins to migrate through the injury and "charges" the tire casing... eventually, the steel belt package begins to rust, which can lead to total tire failure: ie: belt sepearation = blow out.

The only way to properly repair a radial tire puncture is with a uni plug-patch:

It's inserted through the inner liner with the tire dismounted and pulled through the puncture hole and patch sealed on the inner liner...

Really??/ Plugs are bad??? Damn, I'm behind the times.

I thought a few years back they recommended using patches.(?) But then, the experts said "no patches" because they were causing issues with trapping air/water between the layers of the tire. So I thought I remember hearing that plugs were back in. I didn't realize they were talking about internal plugs like in you picture.

I've used for for 20 years and never thought twice about it. I assumed it was the best fix, as long as you didn't intend on autocrossing or driving at high speeds for long periods of time.

I had one failure with a tire plug several years back. It was in my wife's Regal GS. I was driving home from work and the car pulled HARD right. Turns out, the dealer had plugged one of the tires before we bought it and it failed at 40 mph. Luckily I was able to control it and stop on a side road.

I've never seen the internal repair plugs before. Interesting. Thanks for posting, Ken.

So, to follow up, is there anything a DIY'er can do to fix a tire?

I know a can of fix-a-flat is not considered sufficient. Is the only option to go to a garage and get it fixed? I doubt the shops around here in NJ will do anything but use a hot patch. I work down by a shipping port, so there are nails/screws everywhere. Someone gets a flat almost every month

Those plus that Ken mentioned are vulcanizing plugs. once inserted, they literally get melted to the tire, effectively fusing the patch and the tire together. Good stuff.
