The local paper here said it was because of accelerator pedal issues. Production has been stopped here in SA.

Yup...the latest recall has nothing to do with the floor mat issue. It's different all together.

Toyota is in a mess of trouble, even more so in Japan, as the current generation has little interest in buying cars over there.

I don't get this, as I literally drive around at least a dozen different Toyota's every week and have never had any problems whatsoever.
Red 95 Trans Am: M6, Moroso CAI, Magnaflow, Spohn sway bars, back to life as of 2/15/10!!!
        SOLD- Kinda miss it
94 Del Sol VTEC: 27 city/ 33 highway, knee deep in slowness
        SOLD- Good riddance!
2006 Ford Fusion: 2.3, 5 speed, could run 15lbs of boost with a 150 shot and it'd still be slow

I have never had anything but American cars and I don't see that changing.

Where I work they have been trying to adopt Japanese production methods and a lot of them flat out just don't work for what we make. They have a process called 5S. If you don't use it trash it. 3 months later we had to remake $30,000 worth of tooling.

Not to split hairs, or open up a can of worms, but they build the Toyota Tundra right here in San Antonio, TX USA. Many of the parts suppliers are located here in SA as well. I do get your point about supporting American car makers, just saying...

                  5S....Kaizen...6-Sigma....yuck, don't remind me.

I spent years working for Allied Signal/Honeywell. I hated every minute of the Japanese rhetoric being crammed down our throats. I kept my sanity by saying, "Didn't we beat them in a war a few years back?"

Unfortunately, they are split between several different countries depending on where the many parts are bought/imported from.

Here's my take... I bought an Acura that was built in Marysville, Ohio by non-union workers. They employ several thousand Americans. I have no problem supporting a company like then when GM built the last three cars I owned by them in two different countries (Canada and Mexico). Which is worse? Hard to say. We're at the point where the lines have been blurred. I would have NEVER bought anything other than American. That has changed.

I would buy a Corvette without a thought as it still has a strong American presence, however, that's really a niche car. Not a daily driver.

What do you mean not a daily driver? I drive mine every day. I know several people that it's their daily driver. I can't think of anything better to drive every day. That's what I bought it for. I average 18mpg in town and 28 on the highway and I can go 2 weeks between fill ups.
