  • A very long overdue thread (warning two very mild graphic pics)

First off, I have been insanely busy for the last six or so months.

There are no jobs in Pittsburgh, and I was offered a fantastic position teaching 9th grade Health & PE in a school district 35 mins west of Baltimore. So I took it and couldn't be happier! I moved down in mid August.

I moved away from my family and down to a place where I knew no one. I got a great deal on this townhouse:

It's pretty big for just one person, but I love it.

I've also started my Master's degree where I only have to pay $1,600 out of the total $25,000 and the school district picks up the rest. (The district really needs reading specialists)

Now I have some free time I am making this thread!
I am making this thread because I have been granted a paid leave for a week because of this:

Long story short: At the ice rink I took a direct slap shot to my mouth. I do not wear a full shield...only a half visor. Lost a couple teeth and severe lacerations inside my mouth. I was losing a TON of blood. My van, coat, and equipment have blood stains all over. I walked in to the ER in full gear wearing tennis shoes. 4 stitches outside and 3 inside! I will have surgery this week on my mouth this week (hopefully!)

Just wanted to drop a line and liven up the board!

I know it's a little late, but you don't want that happening again.

Hockey is a cult kinda sport. I'm a traditionalist. I know it sounds reckless but I'm only going to wear the mask while I recover (we'll see it might grow on me!)

I hope you have insurance. I bet they kept you in that ER running up that bill.

I totally know where you are coming from. I don't even wear a visor, although a high stick to the upper cheek bone had me buy one and use it for a few weeks. I couldn't get used to it. I learned with helmet only and at 36 years of age, it's hard getting used to another way.

I'm sure you've already heard "It coulda been worse" a hundred times but.... it coulda been worse!

          Good luck in your recovery.

I was only in the ER for three hours. It was by far an impressive experience. The doctors, nurses, and staff were very polite and professional. I've got great insurance thanks to being a teacher. I ALMOST declined dental insurance back in August.

And Joe, there was a time I blocked a shot with my stick and it rode up the shaft, off my glove and nailed my throat!

UPDATE: I need two root canals, one fake tooth screwed into the other, and a composite tooth. Scheduled to be fixed on Wednesday. I was too swollen today for surgery.

On Saturdays, yes. I play open most Saturday mornings from 6am to 8am.

I play league in Ridgefield though. It's way cheaper than Danbury (although you get what you pay for. Zamboni never works, and the boards are borderline dangerous in spots).

Josh - Keep us posted on the recovery. I'm sure all will go well.

                          Josh,

If you like being on the ice, there are other options......

For example, this would've never happened if you had taken up curling instead......

Kidding aside, I wish you well on your recovery. That was a big hit........
