  • Is There a Need for Standardized Cover Expectations in Romance Subgenres?

Many readers rely on familiar visual cues to recognise the type of romance they prefer whether it’s dark romance, historical, fantasy-infused, or light rom-com. Because of this, some believe consistent cover expectations help readers quickly identify the subgenre and avoid disappointment. Elements like colour palettes, illustration styles, or character presence often act as signals, and many romance book cover designers follow these patterns to match audience expectations.

However, strict standards can also limit creativity. When every book in a subgenre starts to look the same, readers may feel the designs lack originality. A balance is often considered the most effective approach: clear subgenre cues paired with fresh creative ideas that keep covers recognizable yet distinctive.
