The RM 88 Smiley showcases the overcoming of numerous technical and aesthetic challenges. The karat gold micro-sculpted pieces, crafted by engraver Olivier Kuhn, are extremely small in size and weight, requiring exceptional care. Furthermore, the optimal arrangement of these components around the central Smiley theme in 3D space, while also facilitating assembly by the watchmakers, required meticulous attention. The auxiliary baseplate is then mounted on the movement, presenting the decorative components on this sloping baseplate to enhance the sense of volume.
Our second challenge was ensuring the movement had sufficient space to optimally showcase the multiple meticulously crafted "protagonists" in this scene. The new CRMT7 in-house movement is a skeletonized automatic tourbillon movement with hour, minute, and function indicators. The bridges and micro-blasted baseplate are made of grade 5 titanium alloy, ensuring their hardness and flatness. The tourbillon bridges undergo micro-blasting, chamfering, and brushing, and are finished with a black and gold PVD double coating. The back of the baseplate also features the same treatment, highlighting the lightning bolt pattern. The small seconds hand alternates between sunny and rainy weather every minute, with sun and lightning patterns passing over ARCAP® clouds fixed to the tourbillon, then alternately hidden behind small, micro-blasted and satin-brushed white gold clouds. These small clouds emerge at the base of a cheerful rainbow crafted from four different shades of gold and treated with 25 hours of micro-blasting and brushing.
A striking Smiley pattern, crafted from micro-blasted and hand-painted gold, is mounted on another bridge of the gear train, overlooking the entire dial; this bridge is made of micro-blasted ARCAP® material with polished bevels and brushed edges. In terms of finishing, every small detail on this piece is meticulously crafted. The cocktail glass is composed of four gold structures. The green PVD-coated grass blades, the micro-blasted and polished pineapple, the gold cactus thorns with their PVD coating removed through micro-blasting and polishing, and the micro-blasted gold sun surrounded by polished light—all embody the pursuit of perfection in every detail.
