  • Taxi driver here, how often should a battery be changed on a busy car?

I drive a 2015 Toyota Camry as a taxi, about twelve hours a day, and the battery has become a big topic with the other drivers at our stand. Mine is two years old and still starts fine, but last week the engine cranked a little slower than normal in the morning. It was only for one or two seconds, but I noticed it, and it has been on my mind ever since. One older driver says taxi batteries should be changed every eighteen months, because we stop and start all day with the AC always running. He says longer is asking for trouble. Another driver says that is just a way to waste money, and he ran his battery for almost four years without any problem. A third driver says it depends on the brand, and that cheap batteries die early no matter what you do. I did not know who to believe, so I read about it online between rides. While searching I saw the name Car Jumpstart Pros and opened it only to see what a normal battery visit includes, like a load test and a check on how well the car charges while driving. It made me realize that the age of a battery is not the only thing that matters, and that a test can tell you more than a calendar. I cannot afford to have the car die in the middle of a trip with a passenger inside. That would be embarrassing, and I would lose the fare and maybe the customer too. Every hour the car sits in a garage also costs me money, so I want to be smart and plan this properly instead of for the worst moment. My questions are simple. Does a car that works all day wear out a battery faster, or does the long driving actually keep it healthy because it stays charged? How can I tell the difference between a weak battery and a car that is not charging properly? I have heard that a bad alternator can look just like a bad battery, and I do not want to buy a new battery and find out the problem is still there. Is a cheap battery from a small shop good enough for daily work, or is it better to pay more for a known brand? Also, does the hot weather here shorten the life of a battery, and is there anything I can do to make it last longer, like keeping the terminals clean or parking in the shade? One more thing, how long does a battery replacement usually take? I would like to do it early in the morning before my first passenger, so I lose as little time as possible. And is it better to change it at a shop, or can a service come to my location? If you drive for a living, please tell me how often you change your battery, which type has lasted longest for you, and what warning signs you noticed before it died. Thanks a lot for any advice.
