  • Chambered mufflers

Ok im not to up on my chamberd muffler info. I was looking at this site sweet thunder and they have different lengths of mufflers. What will the length do to the sound, and what will happen if you use multiple mufflers? I need to replace my dual exhaust system. and these are small enough that i could put two 30" mufflers and an x pipe under the car on either side of the driveshaft. I was thinking it might be to loud, so I could place two more 18" ones crosways at the back of the car where the original muffler was to deaden it some more. Im going to go with dual 3 inch for a deeper sound. Any info would be great.

Ive never been a fan of chambered exaust systems. the 'pulses' have a lot to do with the air-out performance aspect of the engine...talking about the pulses heading out of the cat back... from the studies Ive seen and my experience with folks that have installed chambered exaust systems, they need to be designed for the particular output of the engine its being installed on. it might work very efficiently on the motor when its putting out 300hp......but bump it to 400hp..then suddenly..it doesnt........ and sounds terrible.....

i know of one person that had this problem big time... he had a 97 camaro...that ended up putting out over 600hp at the rear wheels..he had his chambered exaust installed at the 325hp rwhp stage... things got worse, he finaly went with muflex and dynoed another 40hp at the rear wheels, same dyno, same conditions........ and the car sounded like a sick earthmover at the time...

granted, things have changed with them.......

maybe they have gotten more 'universal'.........

    just my 2 cents.........

Hmmmm, Sweet Thunder...why does that sound familiar? lol I've had no problems to this point with mine, but I haven't made that much of a hp jump. Sounds great on my setup right now. I would say to go a Google search and see what reviews you can find. There's one positive right here for now though lol

Well what will the sound do if I have the 18/24/30" mufflers. get deeper? Will this negativly affect flow? Is it better to have the short ones? Better to have them midle of car or at ends? There is a pic of them for a gen 4 f-body but it has 4 mufflers two in middle two at ends

This is basicaly what I have now, but it is in bad shape and my mufflers are at the ends where the stock mufflers go. I wanted to just put two 30" mufflers in the center like on the first pic, then just have the pipes exit strait out the back. I could also go for side exit. Opinions? facts? all are welcome!

Well, with the one that I have (looks to be 18"...stock LM resonator length), its almost as loud as the actual resonator. 4 on a true dual will probably give you a mellow idle with a good bark, but not that loud. Good for taking the family in but still loud enough to be heard when you want it to be. 2 would definitely be noticably different than 4. The more you have, the quieter it will be. By how much, I can't say with 100% certainty, but 4 would probably sound pretty good.

So i guess the thiing is, do I go with two 30" or two 30" and two 18". Family isnt a problem as this is my car and its only me and the wife. I guess I can always just put on the two 30s and add the 18s later if its too loud.

That sounds like a good idea to me. Let me know how it turns out. I'd be interested in hearing any sound clips you would want to make.

Hey, I'm with ya on that. As long as its covered, it can stay put lol. Besides, driving around with massive torque in the snow is about as smart as trying to get a Civic to keep up with a top-fueler...just not worth it lol.
