gas smell in car

the inside of my car smells like gas. it's not strong but its enough to bother me and make me smell like gas. i was thinking it is the exhaust but i have no idea

Most likely your charcol vapor canister located in the rear wheel well - driver's side. Check the hoses - if they get dry rot, they'll leak fumes and you'll smell fuel. I had the same problem with mine and it was dry rot on the lines coming out of the vapor canister - replaced them with a dollar's worth of fuel line and problem solved.

That works on the 4th gens, but if you have a 3rd gen like in your pictures, then I'm not sure if you have one of those. Possibly a pinhole in the gas tank or a bad gas cap (both problems I've had on cars I've owned). I know the gas cap sounds pretty stupid, but on my car it had a crack in the threads and allowed gas to travel out of the cap and down the filler tube if the tank was full. Not enough fuel got out to spill on the side of the car, it was more like a trickle effect. Bugged the crap out of me until I figured it out. The pinhole in the gas tank was because some idiot used screws that were too long when they mounted the amp rack in the car (before I bought it). Once again, only really obvious when the tank was full because the fuel would leak out (hole was in the top) and leak out over the side of the tank, but would evaporate before it hit the ground, so it never left a puddle on the ground.

Charcoal cainister on a third gen is up front right by the radiator opposite from your batt. I ve never seen one in the back of a third gen. Most likely cause is a pin hole in the filler neck. There is a recall on this for certin years of third gens. Cant remember what years right now

Yup, I remeber my 84' had the canister in front opposite the battery.

yeah my charcoal canister is in the front. i just looked under my car today and i found a crack in the exhaust pipes where the header pipes connect into one pipe.

Try putting a rag against the tail pipe. IF the rag smells like gas then it's not a gas leak it's the feul mixture running to rich. If your still not sure pull a spark plug and see if it's fouled out. I had the same proublem in my 85 ta. The feul line bolt that connects the carb to the feul line was lose.

i got the problem fixed today and i also got a high flow cat. and flomasters. all i can say is that it sounds way better and no more smell close to the windows anymore.
