  • NFB - new toy! HP 4155 pocket PC

All I can say is that this thing rocks. Last night I used it to post on this forum, and today I'm playing MP3s on it at my desk. It can play video, music, email, surf the web, look at pictures... everything you'd expect from a full sized PC in the palm of your hand.

I'll be getting a 1GB SD card for it soon to store music and maps. I'm also planning to get a bluelogger GPS for it. I have a couple friends with it in their cars and it is really cool to have it give you moving-map directions. The logging feature of the GPC is awsome too, it allows you to download trip-history to a PC and draw maps showing exactly where you went and how fast you did it.

Yep, I love my pocket PC. I wouldn't know what to do without it!

I use it for movies, MP3's, and video games (Emulators for: NES, SNES, Gameboy, gameboy advance)

I also use it in my car as a GPS using Mapopolis software. It's saved me a few times. It's truely a beautiful thing

How does the web browsing and email service work? Do you need to pay for a new service, does it work through your existing cellular provider, free wireless services in cities, or what?

I have my Blackberry through work, but it also is my cell phone. I was looking for one of the pocket PCs for my wife.

The handheld gets an IP address from any wireless network, just like a laptop PC does. Once it has a IP, you can use the browser and email client as you would on any other PC.

There are no services to subscribe to. You'd be surprised how easy it is to get a wireless connection in a decent sized city. Many fast food restaraunts are now puting wireless access points in there buildings. I know Arby's has them, and McDonalds is catching on.

Any good bluetooth GPS antenna comes with map software to load on the pocket PC. If you dont like the bundled software, there are a few different brands you can buy, or just download them. There are no monthly fees, and no services to subscribe to. It just works!

The software I bought was $99. It's one of the best pieces of software for maps. They allow you to download the app, and the whole USA for that price. And the GPS receiver was about $100. Then you just need the pocket PC.

And for internet service, I use my T-Mobile cell phone which has bluetooth. My PPC hooks up to the cell phone, and uses the cell phone as a modem. I get 56k speeds wherever I have a cell phone signal. Costs about $15 a month for unlimited usage. Not bad figuring what you get

It used to be free because T-mobile didn't know you could do it. I was one of the pioneers and was able to hack their BT software on the phone, and I had it for free. That lasted a good 6 months till they say a couple hundred Mb's a month data transfer, and figured out what was going on. They got mad at me, but hey, it was their shoddy security software. I just exploited it a bit.

Now they closed the ports unless you pay $15 a month. Oh well.

Yup they are cool. Bought my IPAQ 3955 two years (or is it already three) back and after the job I was on got extended I bought the expansion sleeve and a CompactFlash GPS adapter from OSTIA.

Really nice and you can use other software as well with it. A while back we drove to Niagara Falls on the interstate and I had it running. On a long straight stretch it said turn left now even though there was nothing there to turn on to!!??

Mine didn't have any kind of wireless so I bought a pcmcia card for it to connect to my wireless router. The great fun is to drive around sometimes and surf on other peoples wireless internet connection (no WEP enabled).

Other addons were a FM radio card and and a 56k modem. I tried to get a CF camera but it never happened.

Never really watched a movie on it but I've seen software and even whole movies that could be downloaded from the newsgroups.

Only negative is that I have to swap the different CF adapters.

There's no fee to access the satellites. As Jeff mentioned buy a IPAQ compatible GPS unit and the software, plug it into your IPAQ, connect and you're satellite guided.

The only thing I haven't been able to find yet is a holder / cradle to mount it in the car. I've seen many of them but I just don't like they way they are mounted.

Car adapters / chargers can be expensive as well. Found mine at Wally's which actually was one that can be used on a USB port as well so when I'm on the road I don't have to take the big charger cradle along.

Just can't stop jabbling on about it. I like the remote control software. You can control almost any device with it.

I'm usually having fun with it when I bring the car in for service and I sit there and wait. Switching channels on the TV in the area and watching the people trying to figure out who is doing it.

Always figured what would happen in a sports bar with a big screen TV and a big game was on. I'm sure you can figure out what I was thinking

Not sure though if it would be a healthy thing to do.

More info than we need to know.

Our daughter used to be on the cordless phone talking to her friends, have something to eat and sit on the can at the same time.
