In our neck of the woods they even require cats to have licenses.

They got you guys going pretty good in Virginia, eh Ken!

When we moved to Richmond from Ontario, we brought our two used cars down with us and they made us pay sales tax on them for the book value. And then of course the good ole property taxes on the cars every year.

When I went to get my concealed weapons permit I had to go to the court house to get the application. When I got there, there were 3 booths all with some government employee staffing it. There was also someone at the cashier. So that's 4 employees at that office. 1 of the booths was for the concealed weapons license, the other 2 were for marriage permits. Yes you heard me. The marriage permits and the concealed weapons permits were in the same office. Interesting. I was the only one in there. She handed me the application. I filled it out and she told me to take it to the cashier, pay her the $22 and take the form to the police station for fingerprinting. Now what was the point of her job? Why couldn't the person at the police station hand me the form. What a waste of money and taxpayer money for that job.

Definitely an ()()load of taxes right there They wouldn't bother me so much if all tax dollars that were intended on helping our communities actually went to that purpose. Its always nice hearing that your towns officials have been stealing millions from the town for a couple decades. Thus the reason our former president is in jail, and our current one has been indicted for giving out tickets and code violations for no reason and with no evidence.

Perhaps it is for convenience. Take the scenario of couple coming in to get their marriage license. The bride's father can go with them and get his gun permit at the same time. This may help shorten the line for the clerk working at the divorce filing window.

It could also be that you had to pay at the government office because they don't trust the police to handle the money.

Didn't you study in school? Taxes pay for your local police, emergency services, city services, hospitals, libraries, etc., etc.! Do I think taxes have gone a little overboard? Yes, but you absolutely cannot eliminate taxes as a whole or this country would cease to exist period.

Taxes are a subject that depends on the perspective. A few years ago, following 9/11.......I felt that every tax dollar that I ever turned over to the goverment was money well spent when we had the resources to leapfrog half a world away and start taking out the trash. It's the misappropriations of revenue that gets everyone steamed.

Taxes - a little history lesson

Yes, taxes have gone a bit overboard, but the US did have taxes prior to 100 years ago. Both the Federal Government and the Confederate States used income taxes to raise funds to finance the Civil War (West's Federal Taxation 2005 Edition: Individual Income Taxes, Copyright 2005, Chapter 1). Prior to that and after the war, the government was funded primarily by Tariffs, something we've been trying to get away from in recent years. The government tried to enact an income tax in 1894, but was defeated because the constitution stated, "No Capitation, or other direct, Tax shall be laid, unless in Proportion to the Census or Enumeration herein before directed to be taken." (Sounds like legal Greek to me.) The Surpreme Court killed the attempt of 1894. Then, in 1909, Congress passed a taxation on Corporations, which survived the Supreme Court as it was considered an excise tax. Finally, in 1913, Congress amended the constitution to allow income taxes on both the individual and corporations. And what a wonderful mess they have created since.

That's like when I moved up here from Texas in 2002. That year, the Canadian gov't taxed me on my 2001 income.....which I made while still living in Texas!! I hadn't even decided to move up here till like October of 2001! That income had nothing to do with Canada...and yet I got taxed because they said that it benefitted my, then fiancee, now wife. Taxes like that, and paying taxes on a car that you have already paid taxes on are the ones that tick me off. However, I can see how we may need taxes that weren't around 100 years ago. Times and things have changed. The government needs more money to operate now than it did then. It makes sense when you think about it. But, there definitely are a bunch of BS taxes.

The real gripe is whether those tax dollars that we all fork over are spent wisely and we all know the answer to that one. When the governement is any way associated with a service or function there are tax dollars involved. We have no other way to fund government at any level in our country. Tax reform has been talked about so many times it has become a major joke. But that is exactly what we need to put the tax situation in proper perspective. If private businesses operated the way our government does.........i.e. with little accountability............they would all go bankrupt.

The best thing you can do for yourself is understand the taxing structure and do everything humanly possible to minimize the impact on yourself. Here in South Carolina for instance, we pay huge personal property taxes on cars and boats. You buy a new car and you will pay thru the nose for many many years until the car starts to loose it's value. When I moved here in 2001 we had two 2000 model cars that cost me $2400 per year in personal property taxes. For a car buff, you are better off having an awesome old musclecar than a brand new on such as a GTO or a Vette. That is the type of choice I am talking about. Many North Carolinians in Charlotte, NC drive just over the state line into South Carolina to buy their gas because there is 10 cents less tax per gallon on SC gas. So like I said there are ways to minimize tax impacts....these are just two examples.
