  • NFB: Mustang shifter postioning

I sat in an 04' Mustang GT not too long ago and i could not for the life of me figure out that shifter positioning. When i sat so that my legs were comfortable enough to work the clutch and the gas, the shifter was out of my reach! If i made it so i could comfortably reach the shifter, i felt like my knees were pressed against my chest lol What do you guys think? Anyone else notice this?

Big time man. The shifter has got to be in the worst place I have ever seen. Even sitting in the passenger seat you feel cramped. How can people think this car is better than the F-body?

i've witnessed it to! It doesn't feel like a sports car when you sit in a mustang, my mom has a ford windstar and the way you sit in that is the way you sit in the mustang. haha

I think its made for short people. I don't like the new mustangs, but my brother-in-law has a 2000 and its shifter is way out of reach for me. Not only that, but his brake pedal is several inches higher than his clutch.

I love where the shifter is located on my car. Perfect position. I drove a guy home from work tonight. He doesn't drive even though he's 26 ( i don't bother asking, i don't feel it's my business), just had a kid and needed to go food shopping. His fiance was at home with the baby so rather than harass her and disturb the baby, i offered to wait for him to get his food shopping done, then to drive him home. With all of my schoolbooks and car care products in the car, we still managed to fit $100 worth of food in the car and my co-worker is around 6'2'' 290lbs himself. He couldn't believe how smooth the car rode. Everyone expects a harsh ride because it's a sports car but everyone that's ridden in it has nearly fallen asleep while i was driving except for my dad. That didn't even happen in my Monte Carlo and i could literally lay down on those front seats and be comfortable (mmmm, bench seats *drool*). Maybe i shift more smoothly than i think?

For a while i was actually thinking about getting a Mustang. I think they're really nice looking cars and apparently, they respond well to mods. I love the look of the 03 GT's. Love em. I know it's a Ford but i don't even care. They make me feel better about my car though. Even though the 04 Mustang GT is 9 years newer and overrated beyond belief, they still run about the same time in the quarter mile as LT1's (maybe because the drivers can't shift properly) and they don't handle anywhere near as well . And to think i was going to sell this beautiful piece of machinery.

After owning 5 Camaros, I bought a Mustang.

I owned it 6 months and sold it.

I sold it and bought another Camaro. I just didnt care for the way the Mustang sat, and it was slow too.

I will always own a Camaro!

Some guys love the Fords, some guys love the GMs. I cannot understand what people see in the Mustangs. Just blind brand loyalty? Who knows.

Exactly. Find a guy that loves both, has both and ask him. My friend has a Cobra in his drive and an SS. Guess which one he loves. The Camaro.

The F-Body is a car of class and prestige. A mustang is a dime a dozen "me too car". I see about 100 a day at least. There is about two on each block.

Guess that's what you get living in dearborn, where all the ford people are

I personally would love to own an '03 Mustang but i guess it would have to be an auto since i can't shift in those things I know some people that are well over 6' and drive them but i guess i've got long legs or short arms or something. Guess my body has a natural defense mechanism to prevent me from ever driving a Ford . I don't know why but i like the body style a lot (on the newer ones). Much much much rather have an '02 WS6 though. Some day.

i have to say that any car i sit in is not confortable for me since the camaro. everything was just positioned perfectly for my 6'4 frame. ive never been in a mustang before, so far ive been blessed with that, but it sounds bad from what you guys are sayin.

They have to make you feel cramped so it feels like you're accelerating. If you were comfortable you'd never notice it.

Gotta agree with you there, Ken. I am 6'5", and the car just fits me like a glove...with the exception that my head rubs the headliner every now and then. But, I have that prob in most cars. The mustang is even worse, though. Like nightrage said, the shifter is practically on the floor, so you have to reach for it, whereas the F-bods' shifter is right where your hand sits when you put your arm on the arm rest. You feel more like you are sitting ON it than IN it, like sitting in a Honda or Cavalier or something. Not to mention the passenger seat is more cramped than ours are. Completely ergonomically retarded. And have you guys noticed that the Monsoon kicks the crap outta the Mustang's premium audio? Not sure about the new Stangs, but the F-Bod is definitely superior to the pre '95 ones.

When my grandparents went to pick up their new Explorer, i went to the Ford dealership with them. I sat in all kinds of stuff. I have to admit that the Ford Five Hundred is pretty nice. I could have fit like 7 bodies in that trunk.....uh, i mean...... it was pretty..... Anywho, I noticed about 4 or 5 Mustangs sitting outside so i askeed if i could go check it out. The dealer handed me the keys, i went out opened t up and sat down. I couldn't get comfortable and i'm only 5'11''- 6' 170lbs-ish. I finally got to a point where it wasn't too bad, then i reached for the shifter. That took some more readjusting. I finally had the shifter somewhere near my hand although i still had to reach and now, i felt like i was trying to fit in a little kids power wheels car. I got out of that thing pretty fast.

About my exhaust, it drones like Ben Stein. If i didn't have a radio in my car, i'd have fallen asleep while driving by now. I like to have it running at nice low RPM's so i usually put it in 5th at around 43MPH and 6th at about 65MPH. If i don't, that exhaust tone makes me drowsy lol. My stepbrother just moved in with me and he's a Camaro fanatic. I was checking out one of his Camaro performers magazines and they showed an LT1 with a short stick and i'm assuming a short throw shifter. I think that's going to be my first mod now that i finally have my car paid off. It looks really nice. Can't wait. I was thinking of saving up and getting an aluminum flywheel and a carbon fiber driveshaft until i realized it would run me about $1000. Thanks for listening to me rant guys.
