  • NFB: Any of you guys watch Ultimate Fighter?

Just curious how popular this show is getting. I have been watching it since the first episode and am loving it. It is a reality show that has all these guys living together and competing to get a contract with the UFC. There have already been a couple of really good fights. Beats the heck out of watching alot of other reality shows and IMO it shows how you don't need the stupid characters and over-the-top crappy acting of pro-wrestling to make for a good fighting show. Reality is always better than fiction. Anyway, if you guys watch it, who are you rooting for? Oh, by the way...it is on Spike TV on Monday nights.

When I read the title to your post I was thinking F22, F16, F15, F14, SU-31, Mig 29, etc. and what a cool show that would be. Boy was I disappointed.

Yea, I knew what you were talking about. I have heard of it from a friend of mine. I dont have cable, so Im wanna get him to TVO it for me, cause it sounds pretty cool.

I havent wathced the UFC in a while.....ever since they started making too many rules. I liked it when it first came out and it was real no-holds-barred fighting. They had all kinds of disciplines competing each other......the wrestlers and jiu jitsu guys dominated, so thats all you ever see anymore. It was more interesting when you saw the karate guys and boxing guys trying to street fight with guys who know ju jitsu or good grapplers. They quickly learn its all over once the fight hits the ground.....and it always does. That was good stuff.

I was just happy to see that red-headed punk get his A$* kicked this week and thusly was eliminated.

Funny thing is he was talking a whole bunch of crap, lost the fight by unanamous decision and continued to talk crap.

I like how the other guy just said "a win is a win, pack your bags and get your train ticket!"

        That was hilarious!

I have been watching it, probably only because I have been doing Krav Maga for a lil over a year now so this relates to me very well.
Have met Bas Rutten, who was a UFC champ. He is into this mixed martial arts stuff.

That is pretty cool, man. I have wanted to try out Krav Maga ever since I saw a demonstration of it on tv. I took a year or so of Tae Kwan Do (sp?) when I was younger and have loved martial arts ever since. How is Krav Maga to learn? Is there alot of form involved like with Karate related styles, or is it more situation specific? It seemed pretty cool from what I saw, looked like it was a "disable your opponent as quickly as possible, and get away" type of style. Much better suited to real life than other forms that seem more leaned towards form and showmanship.
Anyway, Jerry, I have a prediction that will make you a little mad if it is true. They said at the end of the last episode that a former contestant that was eliminated is coming back next week. My prediction is that Nate will no longer be able to compete because of his ankle and that, because he is eliminated due to that, he will have his pick of who comes back....and I think he will pick Chris (red-headed guy) to come back. I think that could be pretty sweet if we get to see a re-match between him and Josh. I just wish that Nate would have been able to fight cause the guy looks like he would be pretty dang tough, he's built like a thai fighter. Anyway, just my theory.

You are prob right. I don't think he can beat Josh anyway. He is too impatient and will come in sloppy and get taken down just like he did in the fight. The guy is just a puncher and a punk to boot. I guess he thinks he needs to be an A$$*@#% if he is going to be in the competition. The kid is an idiot.

I just hate it when someone runs their mouth, loses, and then they still keep talking crap. It's like when we blow out a ricer and they say well..... if I had this or that.........you feel like saying you know what, you don't and you didn't.

Krav Maga has a few very good things about it. As most know, if you have heard of it, it is specifically designed to bring anyone to a high proficiancy in a very short amount of time. They always encourage other arts outside of Krav.
Some arts look down upon it.....fact of the matter is....it is meant for everyday use and situations where as tae and judo really aren't. No one said Krav was pretty, but damn does it ever work!

It has more universal uses and one specific thing is good in very many situations. Good for all attacks, and very good against disarming people and protecting against knife/gun attacks, even with seminars is car jacking....let's be honest, most people would comply with a car jacker with a gun pointed at them, chances are you will be shot at period.....not a chance I am willing to take.

And the other good part, it is brutal, meant to end a situation quickly, wether it be to get out of one or to down right cripple someone or multiple people.

                Two thumbs up

IMHO and speaking as a Ju-Jitsu veteran of 35 years, the show is the biggest travesty associated with the arts. Taking into account the ancient teachings, this show violates many principles. It takes the artform reduces it to a paint by numbers cartoon for display at a traveling carnival show. I cannot stomach watching arrogant punk kids fight each other for the sake of a few minutes of TV fame. A true master of Ju-Jitsu would not allow the art and their own representation of the art be degraded by such a commercialized public display.

What do you think of guys like Gracie, on the UFC? He is iclearly a master of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but he is using the art on TV (in the UFC) to promote himself and such. He's damn good at it too! At a slender 180 lbs, he does some real damage. Do you think that he is using his talent in an innappropriate way?

Like anything else, there are always seperate opinions. We all have our feelings and that is the typical response from someone of a different art. Which is fine, what can you do.

But at the same time look at the UFC guys, some are boxers, some are wrestlers, but most are coming from a background in Tae Kwon, or judo, or aikido, or muy thai. Can't say a true master wouldn't do......because everyone is different and everything can be bashed lol.

I'm not sure I understand your viewpoint one bit. I re-read the entire thread and couldn't find anyone bashing any style at all. As far as an opinion from someone of a different style I have taken Ju-Jitsu, Karate, Tae Kwon, Aikido, Judo, Mokokan and a few lessor known styles for a well rounded arsenal. I haven't seen anything about any style mentioned to disagree with yet.

Just as another referance, in accordance with the ancient principles a grand master would never lower himself to enter something like a UFC event. In his reality there is nothing to prove, so therefore he would not be there.

Do I think he is using it appropriately? No. The main reason is that sooner or later, it all comes down to money and ego. All I've seen is a decline in the traditional principles over the years, many still have the skills.... it's the mentality that seems to be going by the wayside.

Are you a master after 35 years?

You should see the martial arts at Ballys where I work out. What a joke - they're giving brown belts to little kids that bring their teddy bears to class and can't tie their belts or speak in sentences. When I was studying Judo in Japan, it was white belt for about a year, then if you won enough tournaments and could speak the language you got a brown belt, and a ichi-dan black belt after another year and a half of 3 hour a day workouts, instructing beginners, and winning tournaments. Now they (mostly Tae Kwondo) got so many colors of belts and combinations of colors I can't even tell who or what they are. And the Koreans got a university that cranks out masters and they wear that title on their gi. Heck, there's probably only a few masters in all of Judo and JuJitsu, and I only saw them in special demonstrations where they were these little 65 year old roku dan & hachi dan guys who were throwing around 3 or 4 lower ranked black belts. Martial arts these days is all about making money from the masses and it's a shame for anybody who wants to really study it unless he can find good old world sensei who is willing to take him on as a student.

Kevin, you are exactly right. It seems like I typed the post myself. Evidently we learned things from a different time and with a different mindset, back when the dollar couldn't buy a rank. A black belt was not awarded to a minor regardless of skill due to the master's beliefs that the student was not mature enough to handle the rank. You are incredibly fortunate to have learned from an old school mentality. That's something that had made me into such a hard@zz today. As far as being a master, dear god no.......I could never assume such an arrogant posture. Besides, there is always someone potentially better, stronger and faster. To assume as otherwise would be an grave miscalculation. The highest I was able to acheive in Ju Jitsu was Go Dan. I have such a love for the art it brings me pain to see the belt mills that crank out black belts like JC Penny. I wish you were close by, we could talk for hours on the subject. One of my dreams is to have my own dojo where I could teach the true art to those wanting to experience "old world" methods of teaching. I have had a few instances where I had no choice but to use the skills and am grateful beyond belief that I grew up in the arts and with the old school methods. If it weren't for that, there is a good chance I would not be here today. Here is one story you'll get a kick out of. ........ Out here in the sticks there are a couple of small town wanna-be dojos. 10 years ago I had my wife at the time go though a local school for training. I couldn't teach her, she just didn't respond well being her husband. She had little knowledge of what I went though so her perspective was just what was taught locally. An exhibition from all the local schools was put together in sort of a Kumite style event and my wife's instructor talked me into participating (he knew). It's the last thing I wanted to do, but did so to appease my now ex-wife. Evidently she wanted to see how I stacked up against others. I was merely doing this in support of her. I went to the local dojo for a month or so to get back into a little better shape. On the fateful day of the show, I proudly displayed my new white belt (having just joined you know) and started my day. The arrogant comments by students as a whole was staggering. Each one thought they were invincible, ran their mouths like hormone crazed kids. One brown belt in particular was the pupil of my wife's sensei. It was arranged that we would be matched up against each other for a lesson in humility. His overconfidence and lack of mental discipline was his undoing as I dispatched him in under 15 seconds. Pardon the expression, but nothing pisses off an undisciplined brown belt like being humiliated by a white belt (sort of lol! ) . Next in line was a black belt in Tae. That was over quickly as soon as I took him off his feet. Talk about controversy. That one almost started an altercation with his students. The whole day just wreaked of all the reasons why these kids don't get the benefit of what we learned. Not so much the physical training, but the spiritual and mental growth afforded by the old school ways. It is so sad.

On a side note, I love my Hurley stretch rack....... ever get one? Nothing like sitting in there and cranking it out to a split. Pain never felt so good.

Kevin...... great to see a fellow enthusiast. Osu!
