  • Fred and others .. heads question

    All ..

I did a search for heads and you posted about how you suggested that if someone was trying for at/or over 500bhp to not go with the LT4 heads. A number of other LT4 heads were mentioned. If I understood you and what the other guys were saying is that the stock LT4 heads wont get you there and to get close one needs to go LT4 ported/polished. Now I know it has been mentioned that one will need programming, long tube headers, injectors, etc. I have a new LT4 intake and I am gathering all the parts and pieces for the upgrade so I my questions are as follows:
My car currently has 1.6 rr, 160 tstat, 1 5/8 headers, cold air.

    1. I would like to get close to 500bhp in NA mode. So to start with 383 or 396?

    2. Based on what you suggested what kind of LT4 heads (AFR, etc.)?

    3. Being in Cali I need to really worry about smog. With that said can you suggest a cam profile that might work?

Feel free to add any information that might help to get a workable package

    Thanks ....

You can make 500 flywheel HP with well-ported LT1 heads on a 350. Go to camaroz28.com, and on the LT1 Engine Tech forum, there is a thread with the topic "500rwhp". There is discussion there with input by several knowledgable people there that include comments on how you can make close to 580 flywheel on LT1 castings. Now whether you can do this and still be CA emissions legal is another story. Look at the posts by SStrokerAce, Mindgame, and 1racerdude. Well-ported LT4 castings would make it a lot easier to reach the goal, with the right cam selection.

I don't think I ever said to use something other than LT4 heads over 500 flywheel HP.

I may not have remembered it all but the impression I got was you were suggesting the the LT4 package alone would not do it and that something like a set of AFR LT4 heads would get you closer. In any event thanks for the information.
