  • what to do

Hey guys its been a while.
Anyway Im getting ready to see a couple of grand get put in my bank account. Ive got a 94 Formula Auto. I was think of getting some torq thrusts, Magnaflow exhaust, a Hypertech, an underdrive pulley(or two), a trans cooler, and mabye a torque converter. I was wondering what type of performance gains I could expect to see if anyone knows. I was also wondering where I could get a good priced torque converter I dont want a huge stall like mabye just 400-500 over stock. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

torq thrusts=no hp but looks good
    Magnaflow exhaust=~15 hp
Hypertech=risk killing computer and not much hp gain from what I hear
underdrive pulley(or two)= .2 hp and causes charging problems
    trans cooler=good insurance investment
torque converter=no hp gain but will launch harder. If you have traction problems it will make them worse.

I would suggest a cold air intake 1st.

What gears do you have in your 94 A4? If you've got the 2.73's (GU2), a switch to 3.73's might be the way to go. ($500 minimum with gears, install kit and labor). Going to higher numerical gears gives you a big boost in rear wheel torque off the line.

Do you already have a cold air intake package? If not, put that at the top of the list. ($150)

The Torque Thrusts should be 17x9.5's (or 17x11's i nthe back) will need tires. Eats up some $$$$. ($1,200-1,400 total)

Rather than spend the money on the Hypertech, get a good "mail order" tune on your PCM. Less $$$ and better results.

U/D pulleys - see what Jeff wrote.

        thanks

        thanks for the suggestions
anyway I was thinking for the torq thrusts getting 16x8 (stock size) for the front, and 16 or 17x10 or 11 for the rear, that way I only have to buy 2 new tires because I have fairly new bfgs on already. I think I'll ditch the pulley idea. need some more info on the computer situation please. I think I'll stick with a trans cooler, torque converter and magna flows. And how much would a shift kit help with 0-60 and 1/4 mile. And finally where should I start with suspension. Sorry I have so many questions I new to the whole mod thing.

That's why I suggested the SLP tire/wheel combo packages. If it were me, I would wait a while on the this since you have new rubber on it. People are going to give you varying opinions on what to use. It's really up to you. The best possible packages for traction is like 9"-9.5" up front and 11" in the rear. But you can't rotate your tires front to back with that. I prefer the same size on all 4 so I can rotate front to back. Just my preference although the 11" wheels with the 315s out back looks really bad (bad as in really good)! LOL

As for the suspension, what are your goals? Handling or straight line traction. You can have it all but it will cost about $1000. So if you don't want to spend that much right off the bat, you have to choose what your goal is. Either way, here are 2 of the top manufacturers of suspension stuff. http://www.bmrfabrication.com/ http://www.spohn.net/

As for the computer, you really don't need a tune unless you've done some engine work. The stock programming has an over rich condition that can get you a few horses but I'm not so sure it is worth it. A tune is good to fix the awful temperature setting when the cooling fans turn on. I think I will let some smarter people talk about the computer stuff.

            Thanks again for the help
but I've been thinking I want some "what would you do/or what would be best" advice So dont take into consideration any thing I said before. Since most of you guys already have modded cars. So heres the details Ive got a 1994 Formula A4, 40,000 on the engine and a transmission with 5,000 on it. I have $2100 to spend on performance parts. So what should I spend my money on that will help me the most

see the thing is that I getting 3500 total and the local tire shop can get them and install them for 900 and then I have to get 2 new bfgs to fit the rear cause I'm getting 17x11 for the back and staying stock size up front so I had already subtracted that cost which left me with about 2100 to spend which I want to know what I should do with and by the way I thinking of concentrating on straight line performance but I dont want to sacrifice daily drivability. My longterm (asap) goal is high 11s to high 12s and another minor detail i keep forgetting is that I got one of those formulas that shuts down at 110 or whatever it kind've ticks me off

If you want to go fast, I would pull the heads, get them ported, put in a cam, and throw some headers on. If you don't want to rip the motor apart, put on some headers, maybe a gear, CAI for sure, etc...
