  • 108k miles .. what to expect

    hey guys ....

    My TA is at about 108k miles and I was wondering what sorts of things may fail or need to be looked at? I am talking about issues you have heard or come up with that have happened. I change the oil every 3,500 miles with Mobil 1 but things get old and need replacing. Stuff like when does the timing chain seem to go? Do the internals need any kind of work?

    Plugs, wires, optispark distributer. Other than that, expect the accessories to start checking out one by one. Automatic transmissions will start needing a rebuild if driven hard.

        yeah, i'm at about 105 and I need to do plugs and wires, and probably opti. I get a misfire every once in a while, and a bit of stutter. It's random though. Sometimes it runs perfect, then every once ina while for like 3 minutes it'll run crappy. I'm guessing the opti since it's off & on. If it were the P&W's I'd think it'd be constant?

          Not to hijack Joe...but what kind of side mirrors are those? It doesn't have the "scoop" that should usually be there.

            Also forgot that oxygen sensors could use a freshening as well.

              Don't forget the water pump !!!

              Have it checked out. The weep hole on the bottom usually gives an indication of impending failure. When that puppy goes it can take out the optispark with it. I did a precautionary replacement when I had a new cap and rotor put on the opti. Best to do both at the same time. Mine was leaking a little coolent at 80k.

              At 127,000 now the only other "major" thing that I've had to replace is the starter at 118k.

                lets see at 88000 i have had to

                replace fuel filter, plugs, wires, o2 sensors and i have egr and ccp error codes so i have to take care of those too

                  Ah..... good eye my friend. Those are stock mirrors except with the addition of colgan mirror bras. The same idea as a front end bra, but just for the mirrors. They have kept the mirrors from getting the usual bumps and scrapes. I purchased them from the California car cover company for about 50 bucks a pair.

                    Joe, how do you know when your O2 sensors are going bad? I still have my original ones.

                        I have several scan devices, one plots the activity of sensors on a graph. Fresh 02 sensors read the exhaust pretty quickly. As they age, the respond more slowly and with less of a range of detection. Also the heater element also can fry, leaving you with a functioning sensor but it takes a while for the sensor to perform correctly. You may even start to get a code 134 or 135. Basically, the sensor starts to get lazy and non responsive. Gas mileage usually takes a crap, fuel mixture from one bank to another can be off, throttle response can get soggy, the fuel mixture usually gets rich. Scanners are the most helpful in observing a sensor's output prior to the sensor failing completely. Without those, most folks can't tell until mileage really starts to suffer or it throws a code. At the moment, I have a bank 1 sensor 1, 02 sensor going south. It takes longer to warm up and the cross counts are not a wide as the bank 2 sensor. I did get an intermittant code a couple of times too. Within the next week or two I'll swap out both front sensors for fresh ones. They lasted me 138K miles.
