  • what will i need if porting my stock LT1 heads...

i have a 95 Z28 and are going to go with a local machine shop that will do the work. i want 400 rear wheel hp even though not a daily driver i want a decent idle. the shop guy said he can custom grind a cam for me and port the heands and match the intake. can he port the throttle body too? or should i go with a new 52mm? i want something like the CC306 cam. i alredy got my mid lenght headers ready and the tranny will get a tune up while getting the 3,200 stall converter installed.what 1.6 rr - heavy duty timing chain - push rods - valves etc should i go with? should i opt for the custom grin or get a cc306 from the shelve? any and all info very much appreciated.

I'd recommend going with a grind that compliments the flow of your heads. That will also help with the driveability.

400 RWHP is easily achieved through the LT1 castings and with a fairly mild camshaft, so driveability will be just fine at that power level.

And one more thing...I noticed that you are currently using a Granatelli MAF sensor. I would highly recommend using a stock MAF with your new h/c combo. The Granatelli will make tuning very unpredictable and difficult.

Someone on cz28 purchased their heads before they sold them in "stages". He left the stock cam in the car. Well, he had ~280 RWHP before....and ended up with ~320 RWHP after, with an automatic. He was still running the stock tune, too. He said the dyno chart looked terrible, so I'm guessing there's an extra 20-35 horses to be found with a good tune. That definitely convinced me where to send my heads, if I really get the itch to dig deeper.
