  • Leaking Water Pump??

I have a 97 Z28 LT1. There seems to be some coolant spraying off of my surpentine belt and on the hood, not much, and only when it heats up. I also dont seem to have a lot of heat inside the car. Even with the heat on high and the engine temp. guage reads about 180. I guess my question is, is this normal for how these pumps fail? I don't have much experience with them and before I just replace it maybe someone can help. The car does have 75,000 on it and I believe the pump has never been replaced. Thanks!

There is a weep hole on the bottom of the water pump that normally will leak if the bearing is wore out.
Be sure the purge the coolant system if you put a new one on. (2) bleeder screws right below the thottle body area.

That is exactly what mine did about 2 months ago and so I opted to replace it due to the mileage on my motor. After I got the water pump off I did find out that the bearings and seals were shot on the drive shaft. So you had better replace it before it gets any worse and kills your optispark. Oh and definitely purge the system because if you don't the heater will never get warm.

            Yah

I am planning on doing mine here before spring comes. My water pump is spraying coolant on the belts and stuff. I have a 97 Trans Am. 56,000 miles and the pump is shot.

I will probably replace the opti-spark too. Just because I am in there, and I figure I mine as well, just to be safe for another 50,000 miles or so. I would hate to have to rip the thing apart in another year just to find out my opti took a crap.

Pump doesn't look very hard. Its right there in front of you. Just have to take the fans and some other things out to get at it. I am going to do it myself.

remove the fans? I'm pretty sure it comes out with the fans left in place.

The water pump will come out with the fans still there, but some feel more comfortable with the fans out, and the fans are not hard to remove either. Just tricky getting them to clear the radiator hoses.
