  • some definite help wolfman,injuneer!!!

there is some little punk kid in my class whos daddy bought him a 1998 camaro z28 a4, he can shift into 1st he says that his came with the performance package rear end and it has a 373 and he was so sure and so i kept trying to bet him money but he was so sure that his came stock with a 373 rear end
alrite so correct me if i am wrong in 1998 on the camaro or firebird, came with 3 rear end options... with a low grade 273 a perfomance of autos with a 323 and a M6 standard of a 342? am i right?

Yeah, you're right. The autos were only available with either 2.73s or 3.23s factory. And what performance package rear end does he think it has? I don't believe there were any other options for the rear unless you got the SS, and even then there were only 1 or 2 options for the rear. What does the fact that he can shift it into first have anything to do with anything?

with 273 you cant shift into 1st becasue it wouldnt pass a sound regulation at a certain rpm

Never heard that one before. So, if that's true, then he's got 3.23s unless he's got aftermarket 3.73s. They never came with 3.73s stock, they wouldn't get good enough gas mileage to avoid the gas guzzler tax.

You can if you cut the plastic stop off the shifter.

            right.

no 4th gen f bodies were offered with 3:73's from the factory, not even SLP as a tier 1 on the Firehawk, SS, and Comp T/A.

a factory car is delivered with the rear gear ratio that helped thier overall fleet meet the requirements of CAFE. )Corp. Ave. Fuel Economy).

So far everyone has hit the nail on the head. GM even revised the flash program to reduce audible exhaust boom in driveby sound tests. It's all for fuel economy and noise emissions. So.... no 3.73s unless an aftermarket tuner has done the car, he has 3.23s.

Yep, he has 3.23's. No 3.73's from the factory.

The 6M came with the 3.42 in them, the 3.42 may have been an optional performance item for the A4, so he could have that but no more.

There is an easy way to find out. Mark the wheel and driveshaft and then rotate the wheel one complete turn and see how far the driveshaft rotated.

This really doesn't nave to be so complicated. The 3.42's were never an option on a 4th Gen A4. You got 2.73's with the "base" V8 A4's, and 3.23's if you ordered the "perfromance axle ratio". PERIOD.
