I just took off the waterpump and Optispark from my 97 Z28 LT1. 75,000 miles. The pump was leaking so I thought as long as I was in there I would replace the Opti as well. Question, what is the best way to remove the optispark seal in the timing cover. Can I pry against the bolt or pin in the cam?? I have the seal for the waterpump as well but that looks impossable to get off so I'm thinking as long as its not leaking I'm not gonna touch that one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ALSO, The new opti seal says install dry stamped on the seal. Should I ignore this or do I really have to install it dry?? I bet thats a pain in the a$$ if I have to do it that way. Thanks

Just pry it out. Takes about a second with a seal puller.
Put nothing on the outside of the seal. It makes it no harder to install. The thinnest film of oil on the inside of the seal may be ok, but probably not necessary.Rob B 95Z A4 Tech Page (Part numbers / locations, how to's, schematics, DTC's...) Home Page - shbox.com

I'd recommend replacing the W.P. driveshaft seal while your in there. Mine went and I'm pretty sure thats what took out my opti. If you decide to check out this thread. http://www.f-body.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10143 I was having a heck of a time getting it on without ripping it but using a peice of a soda bottle was just the trick.1994 Firebird Formula, M6, Fan switch, 160 thermostat, Pacesetter LT headers, Morosso CAI, TB bypass, True duals.

How did you get the WP seal out??? There's a small little indent in the timing cover just at the top of the seal almost like you can stick a little screwdriver in there to kind of pop it out but I'm not having any luck with that. If you can tell me how to get the WP seal out I will put the new one in.1997 30th Anniversary Z28. Artic White with Hugger Orange Stripes. I originally took off the timing cover and replaced all the seals in it but when I put on the cover I ruined my seal and then another lol so I used a small hand drill to start a small hole in it. I then used a slide hammer and it popped right out. A slide hammer is nothing more than a weight on shaft with a screw in the end that you just start into the hole. If you don't have one you could probably just drill a small hole and put a screw in it then use a pair of vicegrips.1994 Firebird Formula, M6, Fan switch, 160 thermostat, Pacesetter LT headers, Morosso CAI, TB bypass, True duals.
