  • Any tricks I should know before I tackle this?

    Hey guys,
I just got my plugs and wires yesterday, and this weekend they will be going on the bird. This will be the first time doing my plugs/wires since I've gotten the car a little less than a year ago, and I was just wondering if some of you LT1 guys out there have any tips or tricks on doing this. They are taylor 8mm wires by the way. I decided to go with these because I've heard 8.5mm can be a huge pain in the arse.

I foresee a lot of beer consumption and a lot of swearing to help me get through this one.

    Thanks guys as always
    Chris

As much as youd like to smash the hood in with a hammer, you'll regret it later.......so, the trick is to step away from the car BEFORE you start smashing, prying, throwing things and swearing.

No, really its straight forward. You'll need lots of extensions, universal joints, etc.....

If you have headers, you can cut a deepwell socket in half to slip it over the plug and use a tightly-clamped vise grip to turn the socket.

Not to hijack your post but I'm sure we'll both need the answer to this . . . . . I cannot get to the #7 Spark Plug Wire. It's the one on the Driver's side, all the way in the back. There's a heat shield that holds the wire against the side of the head. How do you get that wire out?

It pops off the wire boot, it's merely a heat shield.

Take off your alternator and starter before doing anything else. The drivers side isn't that bad but the passenger side is a real pain. Some guy take off the y-pipe I didn't but if you find that necessary get that too. Also make sure to remeber the angle of the front plug on the driverside for when you put the new one one because it can be a real pain. Just take your time and like N20LT4BIRD said step away from the car and take a deep breath before you hit it lol.

A piece of rubber fuel line attached to the end of the sparkplug will help getting some of the plugs back in. I don't want to scare you but it took me, on and off, 45 mins. to get #2 spark plug in. Starter removal is a must too. Some you'll get from the top some from the bottom. Patience is a MUST! Walk away if you have to. When you come back it will still suck but you might be calmed down some lol Those mechanics gloves might help with the scrapes.

Hmmm....so basically what you're all saying is that this is gonna suck lol

I think it's mentally frustrating that I have to work so hard to get spark plugs out of all things. I love working on my buddys' older cars with sbc's so much more.....so easy for the most part.

I'll make sure to drop that starter and take out the alternator before I dig in.....and a box of bandaids will probably be on standby as well

                  Thanks for the tips guys
