  • Fuel Pump Question

My 97 Z28 has 75,000 miles and I believe the fuel pump is showing signs of failing. My cat back is all welded on so pulling the tank will envolve cutting my exhaust system which I would rather not do. My question is, if I purchace one of those external high volume pumps, might I be able to eliminate the need for the tank mounted pump? It would be worth the couple hundred bucks to not have to fool around with the saws all. Thanks, Dave

You can't put an inline pump in series with a dieing/dead in-tank pump. The in-tank pump would choke the flow. You could add an extermal pump, but that would require adding another sump and pickup point at the back of the tank.

I have seen the fuel pumps replaced by going through the shelf behind the rear seat. If done correctly, you can avoid creating stress points in the unit body (radius the corners, or add a "door" in a ready-made frame sold by racing supply shops to reinforce the perimeter of the opening), and of course seal the opening carefully on reassembly to avoid fumes from leaking into the passenger compartment, or fuel leaking in a roll over.

You also need to look at how much interference there actually is between the catback and fuel tank. I've heard of people dropping the tank just enough to "roll" it forward and allow the pump unit to removed by "touch" reaching up above the tank.

IVe done it both ways......you can drop the tank just enough, but you really need to get the exhaust hanging pretty low. Ive also cut the hole in the trunk and if I were to do it again, this is what I would do. You can find specific dimensions for the cut on the internet.....

Here is a pretty good article with pics on how to make the access hole in the rear deck.

Moroso also makes a nice access door to complete the job nicely. Jegs and Summit both carry this Moroso part.
