  • is it ok to use my 305 heads

I'm putting in a 350 engine soon, and I was told that useing my 58cc heads from my stock 305 would be better than useing the 76cc heads that came with the engine.

I would be getting a performance style rebuild kit and intake manifold to match.

so is it better to use the 58cc heads if I want to increase my compression and stuff?

305 heads will work on a 350 but not the other way around. The valves will be too small for the 350. Don't expect any performance from the 305 heads because the valves will be too small.

        High Compression

With higher compression comes more power, and higher combustion temperatures which will increase knock.
a 350 has a CR of about 9.5:1, reducing the head volume from 76cc to 58cc increases the CR to about 11.6, that's a 22% increase, how are you goin to handle the extra heat and the increase in knock?
with a scan tool you can monitor how much your engine retards the timing, which is usually caused by knock, the hgher the heat, the more knock, the more the engine retards the timing, which limits the power and therfore the performance, and the life span of your engine.

......and if the 305 heads are later thin wall castings, you're going to end up with longevity problems.

isn't there a way to lower the temperature?

I 'm going to be putting on edelbrock headers but what else?

The heads I am getting said it will have a 10:1 compression with a 58cc head.

can't I port the heads for bigger valve size?

By the time you port the heads, buy larger valves and add the additional labor charges, you could most likely get a better set of 350 heads already done.
