  • Problems after the clutch install...

I've had the new clutch in for a couple days now...

When I first got it, there was a rapid clicking noise when slowly releasing the clutch without using the gas in 1st gear... it would send some vibrations through the car until I would use the accelerator and speed up. I thought it was no big deal and it was either a new characteristic of a performance clutch, or something that would go away once it was fully broken in.

Well, this morning the vibrations got stronger... and then at one point I heard BANG!!!!! I thought, "what the hell was that?" The car still moved OK, and when I was in gear everything seemed fine. Although, I noticed the small bumps in the road seemed to be amplified... there was a loud clunk underneath the car every time I hit a bump. I came to a stop light, and when the light turned green, I started to go... BANG!!!!!! There it was again... "WTF?!?!?!" Now I am getting concerned... Sure enough, EVERY TIME I let the clutch out in first gear - whether stopped or slightly rolling - I get a huge BANG from under the car. The jolt is strong enough to send the vibrations through the car and shake the mirror. It started only in first gear, but the bang has gotten stronger and stronger, and is now doing it on pretty much every shift. It continues to bump around over the bumps on the road as well... and if I am in gear, and let off the accelerator so the car starts to slow down... I hear a noise as if there is a flat tire coming from under the car.

I called AP Engineering, the shop who did the install, and they suggested tranny mount... but they said it should be klunking every gear, every shift... not just 1st all the time, and the other gears some of the time...

Never the less, I am going to jack the car up right now and inspect the tranny mount. I have an ES Poly mount under there right now, so I can't imagine it's broken... maybe they didn't tighten it back up all the way after the install??? I guess I'll find out. Otherwise, it's going back to APE on Monday...

        Found the culprit:

And here is the range of motion the thing has...

Looks like the torque arm mount is missing a bolt... am I right??? Is that what I am looking at? Would this explain all of the symptoms I just mentioned?

Apperars so Jay. Odd that that got lost, or did you just forget to put it back in there when you put the tranny back in?

The shop did it... looks like they just forgot to tighten a bolt down and it vibrated out.

Meh... people make mistakes, no big deal. Just a brain fart. They got me in and out same day with no appointment. I can't complain... they'll make it right.
