    Fred,

Sorry for the bother of a continuing question but the LT4 heads are original, new and never used (torqued down or otherwise). The guy picked them up from the GM plant, took them home and they sat there. Now he wants to raise some cash for another project. Sooooo the deal is he willing to part with them for $1,200 and that includes shipping. I saw on Jegs or Summit or some website that they offer Gen 2 for $673 each.

Is it correct to assume that the original ones are Gen 1 and if so what is the difference between what is being sold today vs. the one in 96? Either version will fit right?

    Thank you.

    Jorge

92 and later LT1/LT4 heads are all Gen 2. $1200 is just barely less than a brand new set of LT4 heads. Considering they have sat around for awhile without being exposed to oil, the valve seals may have deteriorated some. Mention this to him and offer him a lower price.

According the Pace website, the current LT4 heads include "LT1 rocker studs". A assume that means 3/8" vs. 7/16".
This aluminum LT4 design is the same as the 1996 production head except it has the LT1 rocker stud P/N 12552126 Installed. This head has light weight 2.00" intake and 1.55" exhaust valves installed in this assembly. These heads can only be used on 1992 and later LT1 and LT4 engines. This head assembly includes the following items intake valve exhaust valve valve spring valve cap seal key stud and shim.
The studs are easy to change... not sure why they did that.

Didn't I already answer this question for you, with the same info you got above?

You were unclear if they were new or not. With so many threads pushing my response to you down the board I thought I would clarify and and restate.

Well.... I got the heads for $1,000. The car already has 1.6 RR and JBA 1 5/8 headers so I hope I can just move over the RR and keep the same headers.

Do you guys think I will get any boost if I just change out the intake and heads and keep the stock cam? If not its no big deal I will just save up for the porting and better cam.

Not much. The stock LT1 heads basically fall flat after .400" of lift, but the stock 96-97 LT1 cam has a overall lift of .447"/.459" with the stock 1.5 stamped rocker arm.

The LT4 outflows the LT1 throughout the flow curve and continues to flow slightly past .500" of lift. The LT4 motor also got a slightly larger camshaft than the LT1. 96-97 LT1's spec'd out at 205/207 @.050", .447", .459" (1.5 rocker), 117 LSA while the LT4 spec'd at 203/210 @.050", .476"/.479"(1.6 rocker), 115 LSA.

Given this, you can imagine there will not be much gain over your current setup using a stock LT1 cam with LT4 heads/intake manifold.

Save for the porting and larger cam!

Just for reference on the heads only gains...someone on cz28 gained 35 RWHP on Lloyd Elliot heads alone, with the stock LT1 cam. I believe he went from 285 to 320 and was still using the stock tune. He said his dyno graph was terrible, so a good tune would mean a lot more. I believe the heads flowed 270/190. However, as we all agree, even a mild cam would double that horsepower gain, easily.
Be warned though, 17% of people who did an H/C install on a cz28.com poll spun a bearing. It was probably due to a stock bottom end with higher miles, botched/dirty install, revving too high, etc.

Good points Craig. I think I might add the cam, ported intake and heads as part of a bottom end rebuild as well. She's got about 110k miles on her so I figure I will just freshen up as much as possible once its in pieces. Maybe a 396 or something.
