The general consensus is that removing the screen from your MAF is not a good idea. You will see a gain, but apparently it is extremely minimal.

I took mine out when I first bought the car, and before I was surfing this forum regularly. I then came across posts that showed it might have not been the best idea. Luckily for me, I haven't experienced the problems that have been stated due to the descreening, nor did I see reduced gas mileage. Maybe by a little, but nothing that's bad at all.

As for performance, I can honestly say that it is very very minimal. I noticed a slight (and I mean slight) difference at WOT, but then again there are other factors that could have contributed to that (weather conditions).

Here is a pretty informative article that I would tend to agree with.

I have had mine off for years but its going back on. I think it has contributed to a rich mixture condition. Plus you can see where somthing has clearly hit one wire, its a bit bent, probobly a bug. It still works fine but its not worth the risk. my 2 cents

Well, I could clean the MAF sensor. I had the Radio Shack electronic spray cleaner, the compressed air can (used to clean CPUs), and 4 q-tips.
Man, the 3 tiny wires were dirty a lot (my car has installed the K&N FIPK) along with their attachment metal posts. I applied the cleaner and the air compressed carefully and from 6" away, because the liquid & air high exit pressure. This cleaner claims no residue, but I used the air compressed can to dry and the q-tips to remove dirt&claner aswell.
Ok, let it dry about 5 hours and I had to drive the car to visit a patient of mine.
WOW....I really felt a difference: engine more smooth more responsive and a better gas mileage ratio, mainly.
So, I recommend this maintenance procedure...
