  • How the HECK am I supposed to remove the water pump drive seal?

Replaced the optispark seal, that wasn't half bad, took a seal puller and wrenched on it for awhile and POP it flew out. Pounded it back in with a piece of wood, it worked great.

How do you get the water pump drive seal out of the LT1? I thought I read somewhere where someone drilled a hole in it and threaded a screw in and yanked on the screw. If I attempt this I know the screw is going to rip through the hole and cause a big mess.

I see a little slot that looks like you can maybe pry it out with a screwdriver, what do you think about this?

    Any ideas?

I read a lot about how to install it, I will try the soda bottle trick.

    Thanks for the help!

I destroyed the seal taking mine out. Don't know of any other way to do it. You don't want to fracture the aluminum cover or you'll be buying another one.

      Fricking EASY

Fricking easy, came out no problem.

Just drill a hole in each side of the seal, CAREFULLY so that you don't go through and hit the aluminum behind it, although that wouldn't be that big of a deal.

Then thread a screw in each side.

Pull on each side evenly, one side at a time and it will come out.

      Heres a picture.

I used a slide hammer to get mine out. I just drilled a small hole screwed it in and it popped right out. When you put the new seal in cut out 1 by 3 in piece of a 2L soda bottle and put that around the wp drive shaft and gently put on your seal because or it has a good chance of ripping. Yah

Yah I did the soda bottle trick to get the seal in. I got it so the teflon part was over the shaft that it fits to, and then I pulled the soda plastic out very softly. Then I used a socket and hammer "pressed" the seal into the timing cover.

I guess all I can do is pray that it seals correctly! Otherwise it will all come apart again

I got the entire works back together in about 2 hours, no big deal at all.

After replacing the optispark with a new cap, rotor, and optical portion from Advance Auto, replacing two timing cover seals, replacing the waterpump, replacing rubber orings, putting a new c-clip on one of my spark plug boots since the internal one was busted, then putting everything back together with painstaking percision and care, guess what.

IT FIRED UP ON THE FIRST CRANK!!!

          Thank god.
