  • carbed 350-lo3 swap info.

I have a 92 bird with the lo3 305 and 700r4 tranny. I want to swap the 305 out for a carbed 350 and still use the 700r4. I think this tranny is somewhat controlled by the computer. Does anyone have experience with this? I tried a search but found nothing. Thank You in advance.

A buddy of mine is running an 84 bird with a carbed 350 and a 700r4 with no computers whatsoever.

If I'm correct, it was the 4L60E that came in the 94 and up F-bods that were first computer controlled...thus the E (electronic).
black 95 t/a, a4, beefed up tranny w/ higher stall converter, transgo shift kit, trans temp gauge, trans cooler, richmond 3.73's, loudmouth, hypertech programmer, 160 thermo, descreened maf, TB bypass and airfoil, trick flow intake elbow, underdrive pulleys, moroso cai, edelbrock panhard rod, bmr stb, slp sfc's, fiberglass firehawk hood, hawk pads, taylor wires, ngk plugs, royal purple fluids,...and hopefully more to come

The 700r4 does not require a computer to shift, just a TV cable hooked up to the accelerator linkage.

A standard 350 SBC motor will bolt directly into a 3rd gen V8 305 car, I've done it a few times myself.

The only electronic thing you have to worry about is the torque converter lockup. You don't have to have lockup if you don't want to, but if you do, there are a couple of companies that sell TC lockup switch kits, and I'm pretty sure Summit and Jegs carry them. And, like mentioned earlier, make sure you hook the TV cable to the new motor/carb and have it set up properly.

Check out www.thirdgen.org and look at the Engine Swap board if you need specifics. There are a lot of people that have switched from FI to carb and it shouldn't be too hard to find the answers your looking for there, if we can't help you out enough. Good luck.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the TC lockup. I used to have a toggle switch on the console next to the shifter that locked it. I didnt bother with a kit, I just wired a toggle switch from RadioShack onto the factory connector and ran +12v to it. It worked like a charm.

            cool...

Thanks for the info. The lock-up torque converter is probably what I was thinking about the most but I didnt realize that you could hook it to a switch... Thanks again for your help.

Also be aware that the TV cable that hooks to the carb, needs to be set properly to shift the trans right. Several swaps I have done require the use of an adapter bracket on the carb to have the right ratio to open the cable with the trottle. B&M sells one, and so does TCI I think. Search the web for TV cable carb bracket. They are only a few bucks or so. Have fun.
