  • Head/Cam Advice

Well I just changed my oil on my '98 SS. I found Needle bearings all over my drainplug. Called my Uncle who owns a shop, he called his buddy from the CM dealer and he said there was a service bullitin on the '98 LS1's because of the bearings for the Roller Rockers stripping off. I've only go 50K on my car, but it's obviously not covered. Anyways, I'm not gonna go through with the hassle of replacing rocker bearings. If I'm gonna get that into pulling stuff off and fixing it I'm just gonna do Head/Cam and Long Tube headers. Sooooooooo- What do you guys suggest. I'm not saying money is no object, but I'm willing to buy the right stuff first and pay if I have to for better stuff, but if there truly are better things that cost less I'd def want to hear about em.... So what do you all suggest??? Thanks in advance

Unfortunately it fairly common for the LS1 OEM rocker needle bearings to puke.

How streetable do you want your motor with h/c? Do you want to keep it hydraulic? etc., etc.

There are an infinite number of LS1 h/c combinations that would satisfy you, but we need to know your goals and driving habits.

Patriot Performance makes a very cheap Stage 2 fully assembled cylinder head for $1395. They are said not to flow quite as well as the competitors but for they are dirt cheap. Combination Motorsports makes a Stage 2 and 3 head for $1797 and $1997 respectively. These will outflow anybody's heads out there.

Your cam selection will be partly a by-product of your head flow and port velocity data, but will ultimately be up to you depending on your idea of streetability.
