  • starter continues to run

I know this is a f-body forum but, I have a good friend that I what to help out. He has a classic 1973 ford mustang yes I said the "F" word.

Some times the starter will not stop cranking. The way to stop is if I disconect the positive battery cable. Even if I discount the s & I wires from the solnode while it’s still crank by it’s self it will still run. I replaced the battery, all cables & solnode twice and the problem still happens. I know if there is a excess draw from the starter it could cause the solnode to over heat and weld closed.

I have 2 wires one for S and I attached them both. Could that of mess up (overheat) the solnode? I now heard that you don't hook a wire to the I terminal if you have a 3 way switch I'm not sure what that is.

Could that of could it to over heat? or does it sound like a draw from the starter?

    Thanks
    Brian

Does it keep running if the car doesn't start or if it does start or both? I asked that because I have had a Ford starter crank the car and keep running. What was happening was the starter gear was sticking on the sliding shaft. The turning action of the starter makes the gear slide out on the shaft and engage the starter ring. Well on mine after the car started the gear would not slide back and the motor would keep the starter turning. I cleaned the shaft with AutoZone carb cleaner and it worked for another 75,000 miles until I sold the car.

It sounds to me like the starter is pulling so much current that it is welding the solenoid (relay) closed. I'd say replace the starter. That starter is $42.61 from www.CarParts.com . If he has no money to spend on it, spray some carb cleaner in it and flush it with water. I know that sounds nuts but that's what I did to mine and like I said it lasted another 75,000 miles. Besides, what do you have to loose. It's already bad.

I'll tell him to try it. Do you know any thing about the I terminal if that could case the overheating?

          Thankyou

No. My 85 Mustang only had 2 wires. The main battery and one to fire the solenoid.
