  • strange noise need help

I have a 1994 Trans Am M6 and have noticed a strange noise coming from the rear of the car. It only happens in fith and then slightly worse in sixth at highway speeds. It sounds like tire vibration only slightly higher in pitch. It stops as soon as i lay off the gas or put it in neutral so it can't be the tires. Does anyone know what it could be? Also have an issue putting the car in reverse. I have to hold it in reverse or it will pop out. And it slightly grinds when accelerating in first and second for like a second or two then stops. It will also slightly grind if i push up on the shifter in first and the same for second. Could it just be time to replace the shifter and could this be my problem for the rear noise? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the board. Does it try to slip out of gear when moving forward when you jump on it from a stop? If you let off the gas or put it in Neutral, it doesn't really sound like the rear is the problem. Its actually starting to sound like your tranny or flywheel to me. Is the noise present at idle, in neutral and you rev the motor?

No it never slips out of gear. Only reverse. It does shake a bit under heavy acceleration. Not too bad. No noise at idle or when I rev it. Only in 5th and 6th gear at about 60+ mph.

Hmmmmm. How many miles does your car have? Orig. clutch? Any problems with the tranny in the past or other different, one-time noises?

Just bought the car and it has 115000 on it. I don't know if it is the orignial clutch or not.

Hmmmmm. Any slippage from the clutch when taking off? Any noises when shifting before engagement? If not, I'd be looking toward the tranny. Also, check the tranny fluid level.

no slippage from the clutch. No noise when shifting. I'll try checking the fluid level in the morning. Thanks for your help.

Not a problem man. Hopefully its nothing major. I'm sure the more knowledgeable people here can give you more insight into what the problem could be. Again, welcome to the board

Actually, it uses ATF Dexron-IIE, or Dexron-III as the direct replacement. To check the fluid level, you must jack up the car evenly on all 4s, crawl under and unscrew the fill-plug. Make sure you have a pan underneath to catch any possible run-off. If there is run-off, you're fine. If not, add fluid until it starts to run out of the fill hole, then screw the plug back in.
