  • Convertible Top Cleaning.....

The top on my SS is white and still looks great (only 1,200 miles) but I have a few small areas on the top that look dirty. These smudges do not come off when I wash the car and I am hesitant of using any chemical cleaners unless they are "F-Body Message Forum Approved". Any suggestions??

I think its Vinyl. SO anything that is safe for vinyl should work. Try simple green first. Its a general purpose cleaner. If that doesn't work try Acetone. It might work but I think its too powerful as it eats plastic. Try with just a Q-tip on a small area and see if it works. It does workers for white fiberglass that is oxidizing.

Do not use Acetone, it will dissolve/melt the vinyl. There used to be a bleach based spray used alot on white walls, I think it was called Bleech-White, that would probably do what you need.
Castrol Super clean works well for that kind of thing also.

        Wait a minute guys!!!

My top is cloth. I'm pretty sure all 4th gen f-body tops are cloth. Do not use a cleaner on it other than a mild detergent solution or something like Raggtopp Cleaner.

I really recommend the Raggtopp product. I use it to treat my top and it looks nearly new. It is a 2-step clean then treat procedure that offers great results.

Thanks for the input guys! I believe my top is in fact vinyl. I think white tops were vinyl and all black and tan tops had a softer cloth texture on the outside. I could be wrong but I know my white top has a very "plasticy" (new word I made up) finish to it. I have some of that bleach white stuff in the garage (it works awesome on white lettered tires and is also great for removing tire dressing buildup) so I will test a little spot somewhere on the top to see how it works. I have found the best "test spot" is the top material just below the belt/trunk line, which is accessible when you open the trunk. I will let you know how I make out. Thanks for all your help!!!!
