  • 7.5 GM Rearends Why are they weak

Everyone says I need to change my rearend because it's crap. Can you improve the stock rearend? What exactly breaks on the rearend?

No on can do anything with the "10-bolt" aka 7.5" rear people think that the TA Girdle will help (and it does) but in the long run, if your a manual transmission, and go to the drag strip and run DR's you WILL blow it ... maybe tomorrow or maybe 7 years from now. In short our rears are a ticking time bomb (strip wise) and we don't know how long the fuse is. if your car never sees the strip you will be fine (usually) . The automatic's tend to be easier on the rear, but that is only delaying it (if they go to the strip)

I was talking with a few guys on LS1.com that are in the 10's with the stock 10 bolt!......but thats the exception rather than the rule.

Plain and simple....theres not enough beef to the 7.5 inch rear. The diameter of the ring gear doesnt allow for much strength in the gears. The axles are spindly and only held in with little c-clips. You can beef them up with custom axles and stronger gears, but youd be better off putting the money into a 12 bolt or 9 inch. You can only do so much with a 7.5 inch rear.
