  • I need new struts

Did lowering springs today. It's so much easier than I thought it would be. Like way easier. Got the struts off, and the threads on the ps strut were gone, and the nut was just chunks of rust. The struts are mint, but no good for my new springs.

What kind should I get? I saw some 50 dollar gabriels on ebay. Then there are the KYB's. Not wanting to spend a ton here. Ride quality doesn't really matter, but I want a quality made strut that will last a while.

    Any recommendations??

4th generation F-bodies have 4 shocks. No struts. The fronts are coil-overs.

The front suspension is a SLA (Short Long Arm) design. It utilizes an upper arm as well as a lower arm. The shock absorber is actually a coil-over design and if removed, the car will still drive, but the front end will be bottomed out due to the lack of springs to hold it up.

A strut is different. 3rd gen f-bodies have front struts. In a strut suspension there is no upper control arm, the strut itself serves that function. If you were to remove the struts from the front of the car it would not be drivable because the front tires would hang limp.

Tracy and Jeff are correct. 4th Generation F-Bodies do not have struts. They have coil-overs up front and shocks in the rear.

HAL, Apexi, Bilstein, KYB, Afco, and PA Racing make coil over packages that will fit your car.

MacPherson strut style suspension, as used on 3rd Gen F-Bodies, and Mustangs:

Unequal A-arm suspension, as used on 4th Gen F-Bodies:

The only struts on a 4th Gen F-Body are the ones that lift the hood and the rear hatch

I was just for Injuneer to post that picture I knew it was coming, and it is a good visualization of how front suspension works.
If you are just looking for something cheap check out SLP and see if they have any more "take off" shocks for sale. They will probably just be stock DeCarbons but they should be cheap.

The consesnsus of many f-body owners is that for the rear, the standard brand "M" is the best overall ride quality and control for a basically stock or bolt on car that is street driven. Stock DeCarbons are also fine. The front is a different issue. There are so many variables with intended useage that there will be many opinions and options of what works well. The 94Z I had used KYB elcheapo white shocks on all four corners... the ride and handling was awesome. That car had the 1LE swaybars, KYB shocks, good rubber, etc. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. I couldn't tell you about the longevity as I didn't have the car too long. Adjustables are the logical choice to cover all the variables.....

Many also confuse the integrated shock/spring arrangement as being a strut..... as was already mentioned, it is not. Coilovers for the front would be the most desireable setup as ride height would now be fully adjustable.
