  • Tire size

So i just got a beautifull set of OEM 17x9 5 spoke ss wheels with a 50 mm backspacing and need tires for them. I was wondering what the correct size would be to keep the right tire height so no speedo correction is needed since im going from 16" rims to 17" rims?

275/40 R17 tires will have the exact same OD as your stock tires resulting in true speedometer readings. Here is a doorjamb label from a SS that had the 17" wheels stock.

The "stock" SS and WS6 wheels used on coupes are 17x9.0" with 50mm offset. That's about a shade under 7.0" backspace.

What tire size will match depends on what tire size your Z28 came with. The "base" tire was a 235/55-16. That's a 26.2" outside diameter. If the original order ticked the RPO "QLC" box for the Z-rated tire option, it came with 245/50-16 tires, 25.7" diameter.

The 275/40-17 is the exact match to the 245/50-16. But it is 2% smaller than the 235/55-16. A 285/40-17 would be a closer match if your car had the 235/55-16's. Most manufacturers recommend a 9.5" wheel width for the 285 though.
