    water in oil

first of if it carmel it been there a while. i believe the thinest metal barrier is the cylinder walls. if you blew thew head gasket you would smell it in the
exhaust and putting air in your radiator. now if sat for a while it could leak slowly down to the oil pan. and dont the head gasket have a metal ring round the chamber for better sealing. did he ever seriously over heat the block??

      Water in oil

Just completely rebuilt an LT 1 and there are no coolant passages in the intake. The head gasket is a different story however, and this is where my coolant leak was. Head gasket at the rear of the block, (#7 cyl.) was leaking water into the cylinder. This is the most likely cause or your problem. You can remove the heads without pulling the motor. This is not a fun car to work on, as I could have pulled the motor on my race car, and rebuilt it 10 times to doing this once.
