What would be the difference in installing a 180 degree thermostat instead of stock on an 86' T/A with a 350? How will this change the performance of the engine, etc.?

    The stock one was 180F.

The one people install aftermarket is a 160F thermostat. When installing a 160F thermostat it is necessaary to reprogram the computer to turn on the fans at a lower temperature as well. In your car that would mean having a different PROM burned for it.

I don't think he would necessarily want the 160degF t'stat with his 86. The stock 'stat is probably 196degF, so the 180 would be lower, and probably better suited to the "conventional" coolant flow in his engine. He could also alter the fan on/off temperatures with an external add-on coolant switch.

In general, the lower coolant temp will reduce inlet air charge temperature, and allow you ao add a degree or two of timing. That might show up as a small HP gain, with no impact on driveability. On the other hand, it MIGHT also produce a very slight loss of fuel economy, and a very slight increase in emissions.
