    Clutch chatter question

    I have what appears to be clutch chatter when idling out and was wondering what causes this and what are some ways of fixing it? When I idle out I get a mild shaking in the tranny unless I rev the engine up to 2k rpms. I have a new pilot bearing and slp flywheel to go in hoping this will fix the problem but if it doesn't I am going to be stumped at what it could be.

    Well, how many miles does the current clutch setup have? I know when my clutch was getting old it started to chatter. But, if you're gonna put in a new flywheel and pilot bearing, why not do the clutch while you're at it? Just a thought.

      Besides what is mentioned - Tranny mount OK? Otherwise, warped, heat spotted, or contaminated clutch/pressure plate/flywheel or broken springs in the clutch. Also check tranny tailshaft bearing for play, or possibly tranny input shaft play. Throwout bearings also cause a lot of problems. If you want to try a quick fix, you can put on the e-brake and try slipping the clutch a little. I used to have to do that once in a while on an old Ford truck that I had - used to smooth it right out.

        Well the clutch has about 10k miles on it and the tranny mount will have to be checked. Hopefully while I am under the car I can the problem.

        Oh and also could it possibly be a bad u joint on the driveshaft?

          Did your intake manifold leak oil on it?

          Mine did, and it began to chatter. I ended up replacing both the gasket and the clutch. Thank goodness I do my own work, that could of been an expensive shop bill.

            Actually yes it did leak on it but I assumed that any oil on it would eventually burn off. Which gasket are you referring to? Is there a gasket to seal the bellhousing? Because if so I don't have one. Also if oil on it is my culprit can't I do what Kevin said to do to smooth the clutch out?

              I'm refering to the intake manifold gasket. There is no gasket between the bellhousing and engine. I've never tried Kevin's idea. Maybe take it apart and clean it up with brake cleaner? I dunno. Once it's all apart it's easier to just put a new one in.

                Yeah I resealed the manifold about a week ago and that stopped the chatter a little bit but there is still a noticeable amount on idling out. On my way home from errands this morning I tried kevin's idea and it worked but only time will tell if i need a new clutch assembly. Thanks for the input guys
