  • k/n cai vs stock

how much hp/torque does the k/n cai add vs. the stock intake on a 95 z? i was just wondering cause in the new gm high tech performance mag they have an article and it says that a flat filter will outflow a cone type filter.

While that may be true, the colder air charge that any CAI yields overcompensates for it. The better throttle response and increase in power, esp. on a hot day, will make you forget about the stock flat filter. Usually you'll see anywhere from 10-20 hp. I believe.

A flat filter that is equal to a K&N cone filter may outflow it, but the K&N filter is much less restrictive than a stock one, also the setup puts the filter down much lower sucking in cooler air that is out of the engine bay. Not only does the filter get much cooler air but the setup of the piping for the filter is so much better. Take off your stock filter and the piping up to the MAF and you'll understand what I mean it is a very restrictive set up. Not only will you get cooler air with a K&N or a similar CAI setup but the filter is much less restrictive than stock but the piping is much less also.

        cooler air is the key.

i dont think 15-20hp is a real number though... more like 8-12 hp is realistic.. the cold air set up coupled with a cat back on the lt1's (3" intermediate pipe and cleaner flowing system) added close to 20hp according to gm's tier 1 upfitter, slp engineering for the ws6, hawk, ss, and compTA.

I agree. Take out the pipe between the mass air flow sensor and the air filter. Look in that pipe. See how narrow it gets where they squished it to get it to go between the radiator and the ABS pump. The cold air kits make that a whole lot bigger. I believe this is where the gain comes in.
