Don't take it too serious. I think sometimes it has more to do with convenience. Drop it off at the shop and let them deal with it.

Then you hear the cause of the problem and see the price tag and you go "Doh!!"

I recently spotted a nail in the tire of my wife's car. Rather than pulling it out I drove to the tire shop (6 miles) where we know the guy and had them look at it. They pulled out the nail and said it was fine. I didn't have to pay anything but I felt mighty stupid. But I was too lazy to deal with a flat tire in my driveway had it leaked if I pulled the nail out.

Anybody can recommend a good (most bang for the buck) scantool for my 97 T/A?

Ferret makes software that uses your pc as the scanner. If you have a laptop, its real nice. Its about 500 bucks, comes w/ the software, OBDII cable etc. It allows you to do GM, Chry, Ford OBDII. It not as nice as our, Blue streak or OTC Genysis, but its 1/4 the price.

                    Great page Injuneer.

I like the scanners that you can hook up to the laptop PC.

I also have a Pocket PC (PDA) and so far I have seen only Palm supported. Has anybody seen anything for PPC?

But what really caught my fancy is the Hypertech PP III with the optional scanner card. Maybe Santa has to come early this year.

Is it worth the money? Or should I just go with a scanner and let the pro's do the programming (not that I really have much to program to start with)?

You can pick them up used for $125-$175 on the net, with an additional $50-$75 for the scan cartridge. I think it is a fairly cool item as long as you don't expect huge gains from the programmer portion. You can read sensors in real time, record in the data logging mode, clear codes. I have used it for 5 years and consider it invaluable.

                        Thanks for your opinion.

There's this other thread on this form about the programmer since the computer was flashed without downloading the data to the gadget, thus making it unusable. Something like that.

I guess if I buy used I would have to make sure it works which I can only once I hold it in my paws.

Does it have an interface to a PC too? The Hypertech site doesn't give too much info abut their product in my opinion.

The programmer itself will download the program from the PCM, retain it into memory and insert the hypertech program. You can't use it on another vehicle until the original prpgramming is swapped back to the original car. It is vin number locked. The scan cartride contains the interface with the PC and requires the power programmer. The scan cartridge is inserted into the bottom of the programmer and turns it into a handy little device.
