  • Adjusting the parking brake.....????

Ok, not sure if I have posted this before or not, but....How do I adjust the parking brake on my car? I have heard that there is a cable or something on the under-side of the car, right below the console that you use. Is this correct? If so, what do I look for? My parking brake handle comes up a few degrees shy of vertical before it holds tight. Can anyone help me out, here?

I have read that the parking brake is supposed to be self-adjusting on the 4th gen cars. I don't know if it makes a difference if you have drums in the rear. There is a cable that runs in the tunnel which connects from 1 cable to 2 at a point. I don't think there is any real adjustability at that conection.

I read in the manual that the disc brake calipers are self adjusting, but that the parking brake needs adjustment if it can be pulled up more than 8 inches. It says to "contact dealer" to get it adjusted. I have 4 wheel discs...all the 4th gen's do, I think. Anyway, anyone know? Anyone? Anyone? I don't want to have to pay someone to do this for me.

Reading from my GM service manual for the 1995 Firebird and Camaro, it says, "This vehicle is equipped with a self-adjusting parking brake lever assembly. This mechanism automatically takes up any slack in the cable assemblies and provides the correct amount of tension in the cable assemblies when the system is engaged. The parking brake cable assemblies cannot be manually adjusted." You might try slowly lifting your parking brake handle to get it to engage, or check your brakes to see if the pads and/or rotors are worn down.

This manual has sections for disk and drum brakes, so I believe that some V6 fbodies cam with drums in the rear.
