  • NFB: scam??

My friend is currently in the market for a new car. I tried to convince him into a f-body but money is an issue. Ok he found a car a pretty nice rx-7 with alot of upgrades. His orignial add said the car was located in NY, but once he emailed him he said he is now located in Greece however. here is his reply.

    Hello
The shipping for your code cost $1500 but if you realy want to buy my car we will split the shipping fees and you will have to pay only $750 for the shipping. The car is in a great condition ,never been wreked, and never raced. It had to be a present for my brother as he loves this very much, but he did not enjoy it as he died in a car accident 2 month ago.
It brings very bad memories for me ,so here is it,I want to get rid of it as my mother also can not sten looking at this car.You have to believe me that i can't send the car without any guarantees of the payment. The idea is that I don't require an upfront payment, but only a payment proof that will show me you have the money and you're willing to pay.So here is the safest yet simplest payment method possible. I am located in Athens, Greece. So just send the money there through Money Gram but instead of sending the money to my name send the money using your best friends name, your fathers name . This way nobody in the world other than you could ever pick up the money. After you will make the transfer you will receive a Reference number . Just mail me the Reference number ,Sender name, Receiver name and the copy from the Receipt that
you have used.As soon as the payment confirms i will send you the car.I would like to use Lufthansa Air Cargo to ship the car because is the fastest way to arrive to you in perfect condition. The shipping takes 3-4 working days. After you will receive it please inspect it, and if you like it you simply make a phone call to Money Gram and change the receiver name into my name.If you don't like the car you will send it back and verry easy get your money
back.If this is happened i will pay for the returns. But trust me , i am not playing games with you.THIS IS LIKE YOU WILL PAY AFTER RECEIVE AND TEST THE CAR.This i know for sure that i will get my money and you'll get your car before i get the money. This is very easy.I think this is the safest solution possible. It has worked for me in the past and it still does. If you agree with this than we can close thedeal. This is my address: *** Salamader Street, ***** Athens, Greece.

here is the link to the rx-7 for sale on yahoo

I've covered the address just for privacy if it is for real. Does this sound fishy or what? I think its kinda sketchy i dunno tho i thought i would run it across some people who are a little wiser and maybe have seen similar scams to this before. Im just trying to look out for my buddy here. Any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks

Complete scam. It is very well known that sending money in someone elses name is no security at all. Period. If you send it, it will be gone, and Western Union (and the others) offers no guarentee. Remember fake id's to get into bars? Same thing, and in some places, these guys have people that work in Western Union. Beware

It's especially sketchy because the car is supposedly now out of the country. Overseas scams are much harder to trace because of international laws. Not only would I not buy it, but I would report it as soon as possible.

I would definately agree that this is scam. First of all Lufthansa is a German company not a Grecian one, and they are (as far as i thought) only a commercial airline, second to ship a car by air from Greece to the U.S. would definately cost more than that, becuase that's about the cost of getting one shipped on the ground cross country, so the guy is probobly just trying to rip you off....hopefully I'm right about those things, but it just soudns sketchy to me.

Not only is it a definate scam, its the oldest scam going. I cant believe people are still doing this. I inquired about a GTO is saw for sale a long time ago on ebay for like 8k. It was cheap enough to inquire about, but not so ridiculously cheap that it was too good to be true........but, same thing, same story except the car was in Italy or something and they wanted western union.

The bull**** about not giving him the name and the whole bit.......moneygram doesnt even require a name for pick-up of the money, just the reference number for the transfer. So, basicly this guy preys on the fact that you dont know how the wire transfer of funds works. Guaranteed, he would take the money and there is NO CAR AT ALL.

Also, I'm no grammar and spelling coach, but if someone is trying to sell a car, they would probably run the email through spellcheck at very least. It was worded poorly, the spelling was a train wreck (or "wreked" as he stated), and just was overall poorly written. Maybe you can chalk it up to poor English, but it still seemed like more than just that.

If you want to be sure, just do what my Cousin did with a bike he was looking at a few years back. He created another ID and acted interested in the bike. The guy gave him a similar story, but had some noticable differences.

                    Report this guy.
