Kumho drifting competitors seeing red -- tire smoke, that is

FONTANA, Calif. (May 10, 2005) — Kumho Tire USA Inc. has developed a drifting version of its Ecsta MX high-performance tire line that produces red smoke during burnouts or drifts.

Launced at the May 6-7 Formula Drift event at Road Atlanta, the Ecsta MX-C was developed at Kumho’s technical center in Akron. Kumho produced chemical combinations to produce red and blue smoke and has patents pending.

The Enjuku Racing team used the tire after testing it in mid-April. A Kumho spokesman said the debut has already spurred Internet discussions among racing fans.

“When we saw the red smoke boiling off the rear tires, we just stood there and stared in awe,” said Matt Vassallo, the team’s lead driver and captain.

The special version of the tire won’t be sold to the general public, Kumho said. “We built them to demonstrate our forward thinking, technical capabilities and ability to respond quickly to the market,” said Rick Brennan, Kumho’s brand director

Yeah... that last line gets me. They wanted to show how quickly they can respond to the market, but you can't buy them.

I was at Formula D when Kumho debuted the new tire...somewhat not my taste, but it was new and exciting. Sorta when BFG did the Scorcher colored thread tires...cool the least.

the GTO won third, a Viper won first and a 240SX won second...

You can buy them, you just have to be a drifter to get them. This is all over the drift boards I'm on about people wanting them, but of course it's "When's (blank) color smoke going to be available so it will match my underpowered ricer and I can shoot oil on my tires so I can do burnouts and look like a real drifter?" (some parts of that sentence were read between the lines).

I think they're cool, but I don't think you'll ever see them as a widely available tire. That encourages drifting (which is HIGHLY illegal) and burnouts (which destroys tires, leaving the manufacturer with some liability if one blows out because they are encouraging you to do burnouts), not to mention it won't ever be sold until the patents come through so somebody can't copy it.

Maybe they can create an oil additive for oil-burning ricers so they CAN throw out pink smoke! Anyone wanna chip in on a patent?
