When I get into my car after work, it's usually dark so i have to turn on my headlights. Recently I noticed that for about the first five minutes of driving my headlights and speedometer lights kinda fade in and out whenever i push the gas in and let off. It's like when you have a system and your bass hits and your headlights flicker. Except i don't have a system. Would my problem be with the battery or alternator? Thanx for the help.

I'd say its probably the alternator. I have a problem when its real hot outside and I have a A/C on and the fans are runningit will cut out my alternator. If I put it in neutral and rev it up a bit it will come back on.

It actually could be your battery. A weaker battery will lose it's charge after it sits for a few hours. When you start it back up, the alternator will work to charge it back up - this is why the problem you described only lasts for five minutes or so. After the battery is charged by the alternator, the problem goes away. Remove the battery and have it tested - if nothing turns up, then try the alternator. As they say in China . . . . Good Ruck.

Could be either, but it does sound like the voltage regulator is going bad in the alternator.Originally posted by blackfire93When I get into my car after work, it's usually dark so i have to turn on my headlights. Check the wire between the alternator and the battery and see if its melted or coroded. I had a bad wire. The way i found it was using a voltmeter on several points. First Alternator output to ground, had 14v. Then Battery positive to ground, had 12.75v. Then i checked inside probing one of the fuses in the panel and i was down to 11.75v. What i did was replace the output wire with a 8ga Amplifier wire(about twice as heavy as stock) Instead of running it directly to battery i connected to the electrical system junction box on the passenger side fender wall(the red case with all the wires). and to be safe i installed a 4ga normal ground cable from the alternator mounting bracket to the negative terminal on battery. I do run a fairly large system it has helped that greatly. But i did notice dimming with the A/C on and Fans cycling before i did this.. If you have any ? email me bmxracr96@yahoo.com
