    Tranny Rebuild...Yikes!!

    Just got my estimate back for my tranny rebuild. Clutches had gone out for 3rd and 4th gears. Apparently there are various other bits that need to be replaced. The shop also recomended replacing the torque converter. They're giving that to me at cost. Total fee is $2500! I'm going to get a breakdown of parts and labor today and take a look at the pieces with them.

    Anyway...I've posted before that I found a SUPERB 99 Z28 M6 that I'm going to buy. Looks like my baby will be up for sale soon with 127k miles. Everything will be working by then, the paint is shiny with just tiny chips in the front from road debris and a blemish on one side mirror. The intierior is in excellent shape. I have complete maint records since I bought it. I'm thinking about asking $6,000.

    For what it's worth, a performance rebuild ran me $1200 (brought to them) and a vigilante converter is another $900. I would hope that for $2500 you're getting a performance rebuild and not just another stocker. If not, you're getting raped.

      2500 is steep. We would do that job at my Dad's place for about 1400-1600 installed. Perormance is another story. You COULD dump another 2000-3000 into performance mods......but for just a basic shift kit and higher stall convertor we would get another 400 bucks.

        Yeah....that's what I thought. I'm going to go by the shop today and take a good look at what they ordered. My feeling is that most of it is due to part markup. I really just need to fix what's broken and get it back on the road. Nothing fancy. The price does include a torque convertor, so if you take that off and the associated labor, then you're looking at a more reasonable price.

          I had the 4L60E in my burban done for $600 when I carried it in. You may be paying for the neighborhood for this one.
          The Old Guy! '94 z-28, m-6, t-tops, go-fast red, 316k. Now with '96 engine w/ Lt-4 hot cam, roller rockers, heavy duty timing chain, and Spec stage 2 clutch.

            Keep shopping. $2500 is outlandish for a stock rebuild. A 4L60E is very easy to R&R, so why not just remove it yourself and have it benched. Having it benched you should not pay more than $1,000 for a complete stock rebuild. For $2,500, you can get a 4L60E built with most of the bells and whistles.

            Or you can do what I just did. I bought a 4L60E freshly rebuilt with a stage 2 Transgo shift kit and billet servos for $380 on the "Parts For Sale" section over on www.ls1tech.com

              The prices I got quoted for a stock bench rebuild were between $600 and $850.

                Sounds about right.

                It would really be worth your sweat and dirty fingernails to R&R your own trans Joe K. It really is much easier than you would imagine, even if this is your first time to R&R an automatic transmission. We can walk you through it step by step and give you all the tips and tricks.

                  Wish I had the means to do it myself. I'm in an apartment complex now. Anyway...yes, I think I will shop around a bit. I asked for a breakdown of the estimate and this is what I got...

                  About $1450 in parts, $280 R&R labor, $595 rebuild labor. That's dang close to buying a remanufactured tranny.

                    I highly doubt you need all that if you just dropped 3rd and 4th....its possible, but I doubt it. Get a different builder!!!! He's replacing A LOT of hard parts there. Did the tranny make any grinding metal on metal noises or clanks and bangs?

                    A rebuild kit IS NOT 600 bucks!!! 62 bucks for a sun shell bushing???? Filter?, 2-4 Band, 3-4 clutches??? Thats stuff is not in the "banner" rebuild kit? This guy is a thief. I am no transmission guru, but I am the son of a trans guru. I work all summer at his trans shop. The parts to do a basic rebuild on that L60 is about 150 bucks plus the convertor, which shouldnt be more than a couple hundred (for stock). Thats YOUR COST. His cost......hes got less than 200 bucks in parts for that thing.
