  • Differential work

Took my car to my mechanic today to check out a grinding/clanging noise in the rear end. He told me that it's the differential and that it'd cost me around $400-$500 to replace everything in there. I'm positive he's not jerking me around on what needs to be done because I've been going to this guy for a while and he always triple checks to make sure he's not doing work and charging me for stuff I don't need. I just want to know if this is a good price. Thanks in advance guys.

Thats a good price if hes doing everything....clutches, bearings, seals, etc...if he's swapping in new gears, thats an even better price.

If you have a nearby salvage yard you might want to go pick up a whole different rearend. You can typically get them complete, including the disc brakes for a couple hundred bucks. Bolt it in and you are all set!

im wit him. just get a used rear end from a bone yard. mine ran me 150$ and it only has 20K on it. plus i got a better gear ratio 2. and it took4 hrs to swap(including removing the backin plates)

Unfortunately I live in an apartment complex (I park on the street) and have no tools, so swapping out the rear end isn't really an option. Not to mention I'd have no idea what I was doing the whole time and would most likely screw it up worse. Thanks for the idea, it's just really not feasible for me.

When in doubt, enlist able bodied help, hehe. My sister's boyfriend knows some people with salvage yards and says he'll take a look for me, and if he finds one, he'll swap out the rear end for me. I should just take the one out of his Camaro when he's not looking, but I think he might notice when his car started making the noises he heard coming out of mine...
