  • I would rather do plugs and wires than

than working on and under the steering column For a small little part that GM so happens to attach to the steering column housing cover, it took more pain and frustration than doing plugs and wires. No to mention, all the parts I broke during the tear down are special order parts.
    I'll need:
retainer ring for steering shaft: 5694191
    washer: 26011609*
    signal switch: 1995963*
lever: 25140743* (old one not broken, but just old and faded)
    steering column cover: 26035681*
    hsg cover: 26035293*
and possibly a new lock cylinder set because the wires broke right at the edge.
I seriously have more cuts than I did with the plugs...I would have never thought this would be such a pain. Sorry for the vent

It was actually a swivel for the turn signal that's built in to the housing pictured in the attached file. Without this, the signal lever is useless and hangs on by only wires. It happened when making a left turn. I go to press the lever down, and boom, the whole thing just practially falls off. It was a clean break in the metal of the part. It probably had an imperfection.

        It's a nightmare, aint it!

I had to completely tear down my column to fix some play it had in the tilt mechanism. Doing so required removing it from the car. I have never torn into anything so complicated before. I really feel your pain.

At least I didnt break anything!!

I bet you are going to be really carefull from now on when you use your turn signals!

Better yet, just stop using them.

LOL You are right Tracy!! I couldn't find much on the Helm manual on this part, so I referred to the Haynes...which made it seem simple. When I got to the part of removing the turn signal switch (it wouldn't budge), I put a breaker bar around an opening, and pulled as hard as I could. Nevertheless, the Haynes manual showed removing the wires from the harness end as a different harness...so the signal switch was still attached. It's a good thing the wires ripped clean from the switch, and not the harness. I was already cussing every bad word I could think of lol. And don't forget about the retainer rings...major PITA. I was ready to take a sledge hammer and end it all.

And lol Steve, the thing is though, only one person can work on it at a time, so you don't have to worry about anything...actually, when you come to pick up your injectors, your labor is mine LOL j/p!!!!!!

Thanks though, you guys have cheered me up

BTW, Tracy I have a question...how much play did you have in the tilt, and how much did it take to make it move? I may have a similar problem...if I grab the wheel with both hands, and pull down I can move it maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inches downward and a bit to the left. When I let go, the wheel goes back up to normal. Is this what you had? Is this a bad problem? Thanks

I wouldn't want to be you in a bet right now...

I've been there before, but not with my T/A. I installed a Grant GT wheel in my '84 Grand Prix. Needless to say, it never really fit correctly. I went to adjust my seat at a stop light, and I held onto the wheel as I pulled the seat forward, and the wheel came off in my hands.

I ended up replacing the turn signal mechanism at the same time I fixed that problem. It took me several hours and even more curse words.

You'll get it done with time, but GM doesn't want to make it easy.

That is *exactly* what mine did. You might as well fix it as long as you are in the neighborhood.

At the joint there is a hinge pin on each side. The pins press in and can work themselves loose. Also, it is possible for the 4 bolts that hold the upper column bracket to the main column to come loose and cause play. Check it oever really well and fix it!

                        Mine is rock solid now.

Thanks for the advice guys. Tracy, you're right. I might as well fix the play when the wheel and everything is off.

I just ordered the parts through Dal...he is the MAN! The parts came out to be $184 + shipping. Gmpartsdirect was over $200 and I would have to wait 3 weeks for them to get here. Before that, I called up Sam Taylor and asked for Jason Cromer...I gave him the part numbers, then he said he would call me back. Well, someone different called back with a quote of $400!!!!! I just said I'll keep looking around, and got the parts through Dal.

What happens if you dont fix it? Mine does the same thing except it kinda tilts down and to the left a little bit.

It will continue to get worse. It could eventually let go. I'd recommend fixing it. I'd rather jump into a swimming pool filled with double-edged razor blades than have to fix mine again.
