  • Couple of questions (Exhaust & Ram Air)

I'm still trying to figure out which way to go on a couple of mods I would like to do on my stock 97 T/A.

I first considered a Borla or Hooker cat back exhaust but the more I keep looking around I think that an SLP Loudmouth cat back would be better. It looks much simpler (straight foward and less restrictive) and I think you can even save a couple of pounds on the weight.

My question, is the Loudmouth a good choice on my stock T/A, or is it too free flowing? I'm thinking of other mods eventually to increase power.

I really like the looks of the ram air hoods that SLP has including the air box and so on.
Do they fit well and are easy to install without having to do major modifications?
What are my chances of finding a stock (GM) hood and air box or am I better off getting the SLP setup?

When they claim that the exhaust for example will give you an extra 25 horsepower, is that from stock? Or do you need other things modded to get there?

    Thanks
97 Trans Am A4 more or less stock (Mods: WS6 Ram Air with Fernco & K&N, 12 disc CD changer, power antenna, SLP Fan Switch, LS1 Aluminum DS, Borla Cat back, McCord power plate, Spohn tower brace, Sirius, HID fog lights)

Many guys on here are using it, but it's pretty loud on an LT1. Remember that it was designed for an LS1 car which has a different firing order and a different exhaust tone.

SLP sells top quality stuff. SLP was the outfit that did the conversion of the 96-97 SS and WS6 cars for GM. They are OEM quality, the fittment is the best you'll find.

That's a loaded question. I rarely ever believe HP ratings that parts manufacturers advertise. For an exhaust system to add 25 HP to a stock engine, the stock exhaust would have to be a major piece of crud and very restricted. This really isn't the case with the f-body. Best guess is that a loudmouth would add 10 HP at the rear wheels. Now if you had a cam and headwork, headers, a few other bolt ons, you might get 25 HP from the system.
