  • Differential Question...

What's the difference between the Zexel Torsen differential and the limited slip differential that came before it?

The main difference would be the way they apply power to the wheels. The previous design locked the axles together with springs and clutches (Eaton) or cones (auburn). When you went around a turn, the clutches would allow the outer tire to spin faster, basically unlocking the axles. The inner tire was now receiving the majority of the torque application. The Zexel uses gears to accomplish a similar action but applies the more torque to the wheel that would have the most traction.... which is actually the outer wheel. The Zexel is perfect for a road racing type of application where powering out of turns is desired. The previous Eaton style is better suited to a dragstrip application, where the differential is trying to keep both wheels locked at all times for straight line traction.
