  • Any way to check codes on a 94 LT1?

Is there any other way to check codes on a 94 Firebird TA? I've tried the jumper wire method described in the Haynes manual, and I've tried a code reader from Sears, but nothing is working. The only thing that happens is that the cooling fans turn on, and something that sounds like an air pump is running.

    Any help is appreciated.

    You need a real scanner.

The fans are programmed to come on when there is a trouble code (for most codes).

neither of those methods is correct. As was already mentioned, you need a real scanner. Advance and Autozone both carry Actron scanners for OBD I.

Other handheld scanners to consider are the AutoXray OBD-I, and the ScanMaster LT1. If you have a laptop, you can download FreeScan or TTS DataMaster for free, and connect the laptop to the ALDL connector using a cable from AKM Electronics:

The Sears "code reader" is nothing more than a device to short the pins in the connector..... sort of a $30 paperclip. 1993 was the last year that would work with an F-Body LT1.

Thanks for the help. I'm having the shop check for codes when it goes in for inspection tomorrow. Good thing a car can pass inspection in PA without being able to run.

And thanks for the scan software links. I will definitely be getting that.
