Many thanks for the many responses, which just proves how invaluable these forums are and how great this particular one is.
I have to agree with many of you since I have read many threads reference stripped gears in the motors!
To Pontiacfan, I only have the Bilstein suspension upgrade listed on the passenger door sticker. The ride is somewhat harsh but damn does it handle!!!!
Going to a show on Sunday, hopefully in a convoy which will include several F-bods, if I can I'll show some pics.

Stripped gears are a very common problem, but you said the sound was continuous and didn't stop after a couple seconds. With this being the case, it leads me to believe there is something else wrong.

The reason why a stripped gear makes noise, is because power is still being sent to the motor for about an additional 5 seconds after the lights pop up or down. With a good gear, it meshes perfectly, and once it has stopped rotating its intended 180 degrees, it stays meshed and doesn't move anymore; even though its continuing to receive power. With a stripped gear, for those 5 seconds, the gear isn't meshed the way it should be, and it still wants to move. This in combination with the plastic pieces that were once the teeth of your gear getting caught make that horrendous noise.

Now with you, you're saying that the noise doesn't stop. What this means is that your motor is constantly getting power; even when it shouldn't be. Now I'm not an electrical guru, but I would think it goes further than just your motor.

If I were you my plan of attack would consist of....
      1) Diagnosing why you are constantly receiving power to your headlight motor
      2) Fix that stripped gear

      Good Luck

hi paul congrats on getting the car done. were the head lights playing about befor you had it sva tested? it sounds like a wireing fault to me. i have just had a play around with my head lamps as i was fed up with the doors coming up with the side lights on not sure if it is the same on your car but the door control module on mine is mounted at the front to the left hand side of the raidator. just check to see if any wires have been cut and spliced into this unit. also i thought the guys that done the sva work were gona put it back to us speck for you ps what show are you going to?

                Hi bigtow,
As far as I can tell the sva guys just snipped the power feed to the motor so as to make them stay up permanently just to get through the test.
They put the lights back to how I did them,i.e.reverse indicators and the sidelights incorporated in the front indicator.
On Sunday I'm going to the CanAm lazy sunday show down in Poole, as far as I know I'm possibly the only one going from the club so if you want to go it's at St Edwards school,Dale Valley road,Oakdale,Poole.
                Maybe see you there?
All the best to your family

Hello everyone,I've solved the light motor problem which was due to the stripped teeth that seems a common problem.
Many thanks to all who have helped me,which is why this forum has to be the best F-body forum on the net!
